Researchers have discovered that readers often struggle to distinguish between stories written by AI and those composed by humans, although individuals familiar with AI tools tended to make more accurate guesses.
A recent study from Villanova University indicates that many readers found it difficult to differentiate between AI-generated narratives and those penned by humans, and frequently rated the AI-generated stories more positively.
The research, led by Dr. Deena Skolnick Weisberg and published in the journal Judgment and Decision Making (as reported by The Guardian), involved over 1,600 participants who were asked to evaluate one of six short stories—three authored by humans and three created by ChatGPT—based on quality and engagement. Although participants were told who authored the story, this information was not always accurate.
AI-generated stories received higher ratings, but those labeled as "human" still performed better
Participants who read AI-generated stories often rated them as more engaging and of superior quality compared to those who read human-written versions. Conversely, stories attributed to humans scored higher than those tagged as AI, despite the actual authorship.
Weisberg commented that these findings illustrate AI's increased proficiency in creating engaging and readable fiction, though she emphasized that this does not diminish the relevance of human authors.
Most readers were unable to identify the difference
In a follow-up assessment, participants were given one human-written story and one AI-generated story based on the same theme, then asked to identify which was which. They primarily failed, guessing correctly only as often as would be expected by chance. The only group that performed notably better were individuals who claimed to be more knowledgeable about AI systems, implying that recognizing AI writing might be a skill that can be learned rather than an innate ability.
Earlier this year, the Commonwealth Short Story Prize encountered a similar issue when online readers identified three of its five winning entries as AI-created, which an AI detection tool corroborated. A separate verification conducted by the prize's publisher yielded inconclusive results. The fact that expert judges and readers with established reputations struggled to reach a conclusion suggests that it's unrealistic to expect casual readers to discern the differences.
