      Google has confirmed that the Assistant feature on Android phones will be discontinued starting September 4, directing all users to switch to Gemini. This transition may take several weeks, allowing some users a brief extension before the final change. Initially, the plan was to phase out Assistant by late 2025, but Google accelerated the timeline to strengthen Gemini's functionality, which it now feels is ready for use.

      The shutdown will not be limited to phones; smartwatches, headphones, and vehicles utilizing Android Auto will also lose Assistant and transition to Gemini, as these devices function through phone connectivity for smart features. Most Google smart home devices have already made this switch. However, Android TVs, set-top boxes, and cars with built-in Google services are not included in this immediate transition and will undergo changes later, with no specific dates announced.

      Older devices that do not meet Gemini’s minimum requirements or users in regions lacking Gemini support may retain Assistant for a longer period, but most users will lose access within one to two months. Google has restructured its Search function around AI-generated summaries and has faced criticism for replacing a reliable system with a less predictable one. This concern is similarly relevant here: while Assistant was limited but dependable, Gemini is capable yet at times forgetful of its tools, goes off-topic, or misinterprets swift voice commands that Assistant managed with consistency.

      Now, saying "Hey Google" means interacting with a generative AI chatbot rather than a rule-based assistant. For users needing to set a timer, play a song, or check the weather, Gemini offers more capability than required but can be less reliable than its predecessor. A German court has deemed Google responsible for AI-generated content, and every difference in user experience with Gemini versus Assistant represents a change imposed by Google without user consent. The only alternative is to disable voice control altogether.
