Google Assistant has been given a shutdown date, and it's just a few weeks from now.

      Google Assistant will begin its shutdown on September 4, 2026, as it gives way to Gemini, as announced by Google in an email to users that has been shared on Reddit.

      The transition will occur over several weeks, meaning Assistant will not be removed from all devices simultaneously. When the change reaches a compatible Android device, Gemini will take the place of Assistant, and users will not have the option to revert back.

      Which devices will lose Assistant first

      The shutdown affects compatible Android phones and tablets, as well as accessories reliant on the phone's assistant. Google has identified Wear OS watches, compatible headphones, and vehicles utilizing Android Auto via a connected phone among those impacted.

      It's important to note the distinction regarding Android Auto. Vehicles that function through a linked phone will transition to Gemini alongside the phone, while those with Google built-in will continue to run Assistant for the moment. This means Google is managing two different transition timelines based on where the assistant operates.

      Vehicles with Google built-in will not be subject to the September 4 cutoff and will keep using Assistant afterwards. Additionally, Google TV devices, smart speakers, and smart displays will also not be affected by this phase. Google plans to provide further details about their transition to Gemini later.

      Who can keep Assistant for now

      Google Assistant will not be eliminated from all Android devices. Phones and tablets that do not meet the minimum system requirements for Gemini, or are located in regions where Gemini is unavailable, will maintain access to Assistant for the time being.

      Eligible devices will transition automatically. Once the migration occurs, the usual power-button shortcut or voice command will initiate Gemini instead.

      What users should expect next

      Users will not need to change any settings or install additional software to initiate the transition. Google will start the rollout on September 4, rather than discontinuing Assistant on all devices simultaneously.

      Those who still depend on Assistant should anticipate that Gemini will soon assume control of those familiar shortcuts. Devices and regions that are currently unsupported will have a temporary extension, but Google has not disclosed the duration of this exception.
