Disney will allow TikTok users to produce short videos by remixing beloved franchises such as Marvel and Star Wars.
Disney is preparing to offer something unique to fan edits: official approval. A new agreement with TikTok will allow creators to utilize characters, scenes, and other elements from numerous Disney films and television shows in their own short videos. This extensive catalog will include collections from Disney’s wide array of brands, such as Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and FX.
The partnership will initially launch as a pilot program in the U.S. in the coming months, with plans for future expansion into other markets. Disney and TikTok have not yet disclosed which creators will be the first to gain access or the specific films, shows, and characters that will be included.
Your TikTok edit might even be featured on Disney+
This deal goes significantly beyond simply permitting licensed clips on TikTok. Disney will curate select videos created by users for distribution in Verts, a section of the Disney+ mobile app dedicated to vertical video. This development marks the first occurrence of TikTok videos being showcased on a different streaming service through such a partnership.
Earlier this year, Disney introduced Verts as a scrollable feed featuring short clips and highlights from its films and series. Viewers can add a title to their Watchlist or transition directly from a clip to the entire movie or episode. The company had already mentioned that user-generated content would eventually be included in the feed, and this TikTok agreement clarifies the source of some of that content.
It presents TikTok creators with a distinctive opportunity to transition from fan culture to Disney’s streaming service. A well-crafted remix from Marvel, a humorous Pixar edit, or a Star Wars-inspired video could reach audiences beyond TikTok while also promoting the original content on Disney+.
Disney has yet to clarify the guidelines
The announcement does not specify how creators will be chosen or what editing privileges they will have. It remains unclear what monetization options will be available for creators using Disney assets. There are also uncertainties regarding content approval, moderation, music rights, likeness rights of actors, and the extent to which creators can modify the original material.
These limitations are significant for franchises that Disney has traditionally safeguarded. Having access to approved scenes and characters is quite different from an unrestricted license to edit or reinterpret Marvel or Star Wars as one sees fit. Last year, TikTok users shared an average of 6.5 million posts related to films and television daily, with nearly half of those surveyed watching something after discovering it on the platform.
Disney already benefits from fan edits, memes, theories, and reaction videos. This agreement allows the company to authorize that creativity, promote the best content on Disney+, and leverage TikTok’s continuous remix culture as marketing for its most popular franchises.
