Disney will allow TikTok users to produce short videos by remixing popular franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, and others.
Disney is ready to grant something unique to fan edits: official approval. A new collaboration with TikTok will allow creators to incorporate characters, scenes, and various assets from numerous Disney films and TV series into their short videos. The catalog will cover Disney's vast array of brands, including Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and FX.
The partnership will start with a pilot program in the US in the coming months, with intentions to expand to other markets. Disney and TikTok have not yet disclosed which creators will be granted access first or the specific films, shows, and characters that will be included.
Your TikTok edit might make its way to Disney+
This agreement goes well beyond just using licensed clips on TikTok. Disney will choose selected creator-generated videos for distribution through Verts, the vertical video section in the Disney+ mobile app. This marks the first instance of TikTok videos appearing on another streaming platform through such a collaboration.
Earlier this year, Disney introduced Verts as a scrollable feed of brief scenes and highlights from its films and series. Viewers can save titles to their Watchlist or jump directly from a clip to the full movie or episode. The company had previously indicated that videos created by fans would eventually be added to the feed, and the TikTok collaboration now clarifies the source of some of that content.
This initiative provides TikTok creators an uncommon pathway from fan culture to Disney's streaming service. A well-crafted Marvel remix, Pixar joke, or Star Wars edit could reach audiences beyond TikTok while promoting the original titles on Disney+.
Disney has yet to clarify the rules
The announcement does not specify how creators will be chosen or what editing rights they will have. The monetization permissions for creators using Disney assets remain uncertain as well. There are also unanswered questions concerning approval, moderation, music rights, actor likenesses, and the extent of alterations creators can make to the original content.
These boundaries are significant for franchises that Disney has historically guarded closely. Access to approved scenes and characters does not equate to a blanket license to reinterpret Marvel or Star Wars as one wishes. Last year, TikTok users shared an average of 6.5 million posts related to films and TV daily, with nearly half of surveyed viewers acknowledging they watched something after discovering it on the platform.
Disney already enjoys the fruits of fan edits, memes, theories, and reaction videos. This agreement offers the company a way to legitimize that creativity, showcase the best outcomes on Disney+, and utilize TikTok's limitless remix culture for marketing its most prominent franchises.
