The monkey market pressure is not limited to China. Prices in the United States have also remained high, with long-tailed macaques now priced between $11,000 and $35,000, far exceeding the few thousand dollars they cost prior to the pandemic.
The US is vulnerable due to its dependency on imports, bringing in around 30,000 monkeys annually, primarily from Southeast Asia. This reliance can be disrupted suddenly by crackdowns on smuggling or changes in export regulations.
In contrast, China's more self-reliant position is bolstered by substantial domestic breeding capabilities developed over the years, allowing its labs a more reliable supply amidst rising prices while avoiding the import-related risks facing American competitors.
This contrast raises larger concerns in Washington. Biotechnology has joined semiconductors and AI on the list of sectors where officials fear losing ground to China, with control over primary research resources fueling this anxiety.
The fragility of securing test animals is significant to the broader race. A nation unable to obtain testing animals cannot effectively progress drugs through clinical trials, making control of the primate supply chain a quietly strategic advantage in biotechnology.
Moreover, the shortage is reviving discussions about alternatives to animal testing, such as lab-grown tissues or computer models, although regulators still regard monkey data as the gold standard for safety.
Additionally, this situation dampens the excitement surrounding accelerated scientific progress. Despite the potential of AI to hasten drug discovery, the physical limitations of testing persist, and the lack of monkeys serves as a stubborn reminder that biological processes follow their own timeline.
