      According to a Automotive News article, Volvo is discreetly developing a compact electric crossover named the EX50, intended to replace the outdated EX40 in the U.S. market around 2027.

      What could the expected price of the new Volvo be?

      This is the intriguing part. Even though the EX50 is positioned below the EX40 in price, it is reportedly larger in height and length, a factor that has historically been favored in the American automotive market.

      The anticipated price is said to fall in the high $40,000 range, significantly lower than the current starting price of the EX40, which is $56,545. For context, this pricing is about $10,000 less than the freshly launched EX60.

      The EX50 is expected to share its SPA3 architecture with the EX60. With the smaller EX30 set to discontinue after this year, this new model would essentially become Volvo’s most economical entry into its electric lineup in the U.S.

      Where will it be manufactured?

      Currently, production is expected to start in the spring of 2027 at Volvo’s new facility in Kosice, Slovakia. This plant has a budget of around $1.25 billion and an annual production capacity of up to 250,000 vehicles. However, analysts from AutoForecast Solutions estimate the EX50’s annual output to be closer to 90,000 units, which is a more conservative projection.

      There’s an interesting dimension to this story as well. Volvo’s corporate sibling, Polestar, has been prohibited from selling vehicles in the U.S. due to trade regulations. This ban will take effect for the 2027 model year, impacting the release of the Polestar 7 crossover.

      Some of the design work for the canceled Polestar 7 is reportedly being redirected to the EX50. While Volvo has not publicly confirmed this, the company has stated that it intends to unveil two new EVs before the end of summer.
