Xiaomi’s SkyNomad SUV could take the place of your car, workspace, lounge, and tent

Xiaomi's latest family SUV resembles a mobile home, boasting a claimed range of over 1,000 miles. The price is notably lower than what its impressive feature set would lead one to expect. The company has officially introduced the SkyNomad N90 Max in China for 299,900 yuan, which is approximately $44,400 based on direct conversion.

Preorders are now available, with the first units slated to reach customers in September. While the converted price gives context, it does not reflect prices outside of China. Xiaomi describes its seven-seat flagship as a “house you can move,” a grand claim that becomes clearer upon exploring the interior.

Xiaomi designed the SUV with multiple functional areas

The N90 Max features front seats that can swivel 180 degrees to face the second row. Its center armrest can slide out to transform into a table, and the second row includes zero-gravity seats with extendable footrests. Certain options also provide a refrigerator and overhead speakers.

The flexible cabin can transform into a personal studio, café for two, lounge for three, or a family play area when parked. This setup addresses various comfort needs during long trips. The innovative Kunlun architecture with a flat floor and extended seat rails enables these transformations.

The N90 Max Camping Edition takes things even further. It comes with a pop-up roof that contains an elevated sleeping area, a connection point for a side tent, added storage, and a removable table. An in-car projector can also be included, effectively converting the SUV into a small mobile campsite.

Its range specifications are equally astonishing

Powered by a 76kWh battery, the N90 Max's electric motors are complemented by a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that serves as an onboard generator. Coupled with a 60-liter fuel tank, Xiaomi claims this system can achieve up to 1,705km, or about 1,059 miles, based on China’s testing standards.

The larger battery can deliver a range of up to 505km solely on electric power under the CLTC standard. Dual-motor variations generate a combined output of 310kW, which is roughly 416 horsepower. Xiaomi also showcased the smaller five-seat SkyNomad N70 and N70 Max, though detailed pricing for these models is not yet available. The SkyNomad series is currently focused on the Chinese market. Xiaomi aims to start selling vehicles in Europe by 2027, but it has not yet confirmed if this large mobile home will be included.

Mazda’s chief indicates that the MX-5 Miata could transition to electric

For a long time, the idea of an electric Mazda MX-5 Miata seemed nearly unfeasible. This small roadster has always been celebrated for its lightweight nature. Many enthusiasts believed that adding a heavy battery would compromise the Miata's signature driving experience. However, it appears Mazda has reconsidered. In an interview with German publication auto motor und sport, Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro confirmed that the upcoming MX-5 is being developed with the possibility of an all-electric variant in mind. This does not imply that the classic roadster will phase out gasoline soon, but it does indicate that Mazda aims for the Miata to endure in a future where internal combustion engines may not be viable.
