      ChangXin Memory Technologies has almost completed the R&D verification for LPDDR6 smartphone memory operating at speeds reaching 12.8Gbps, according to China Business News. This stage is among the last technical phases before entering trial production. If successful, CXMT could initiate mass production in the latter half of the year, positioning it alongside Samsung and SK Hynix as one of the earliest producers of next-generation mobile memory, following a remarkable 470% surge during its Shanghai IPO last week.

      The timing is crucial as the current memory market is in disarray. LPDDR5X prices surged by 78-83% in Q2 due to AI data centers consuming the available production capacity, reports TrendForce. There are indications that Samsung is reassessing the inclusion of LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 storage in the Galaxy S27 Ultra due to cost and mass production uncertainties. LPDDR6 is projected to be approximately 20% more expensive than LPDDR5X, limiting its initial use to high-end flagship devices. A competitive second supplier could alter this situation.

      Apple has begun testing CXMT’s memory chips for devices intended for the Chinese market, though this initiative faces opposition from Washington. Reports indicate that Xiaomi is gearing up for a flagship device that could become one of the first to incorporate LPDDR6. CXMT commands over 30% of China's domestic LPDDR market and about 8% of the global DRAM market. Introducing LPDDR6 to its lineup would enable it to compete directly with Samsung and SK Hynix at the cutting edge, rather than just in the standard DDR5 segment.

      CXMT still needs to demonstrate production yields, reliability, and manufacturing capacity. The ongoing AI surge has been impacting the budget smartphone market by reallocating memory supply to data centers, and while a new LPDDR6 supplier won't instantly reduce prices, it would provide phone manufacturers with essential bargaining power that they currently lack. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron dominate over 90% of the global DRAM market. The successful entry of CXMT into LPDDR6 production would represent a significant challenge to this oligopoly in the domain of next-generation mobile memory.
