Samsung's upcoming tracker might have a more appealing design but could be more challenging to attach.

      Samsung seems poised to give its Galaxy SmartTag another redesign. However, this update might come at the cost of one of the SmartTag 2's key advantages. A recent report from SamMobile has revealed what could be the design for the upcoming Galaxy SmartTag 3.

      The new smart tracker features a compact squircle-shaped body, drawing inspiration from Samsung's recent One UI icons and the shape seen around newer Galaxy Watch displays. In contrast, the existing SmartTag 2 has a very different appearance, boasting a longer pill-shaped body with a prominent integrated loop at one end. The leaked design for the SmartTag 3 eliminates that loop altogether.

      Samsung may be sacrificing a design element that I actually appreciated.

      While this alteration might enhance the aesthetic of Samsung’s next tracker, it could also lead to the same frustration faced by AirTag users over the years. Apple's trackers require an additional accessory for attaching the device to items. SamMobile notes that the SmartTag 3 seemingly lacks a built-in lanyard hole, which means users might need to purchase a separate case to secure it to keys, bags, or other items without a pocket for the tracker.

      This is a perplexing backward step compared to the SmartTag 2. Samsung specifically created its 2023 tracker with a large integrated ring that simplifies attachment without needing to buy additional accessories. The SmartTag 2 measures 28.8 x 52.44 x 8mm and weighs 13.75 grams, while also featuring UWB, Bluetooth 5.3, and IP67 water and dust resistance.

      The leaked SmartTag 3 design also seems to bring back a prominent button at its center. SamMobile speculates that this button could once again be used to ring a connected Galaxy phone or to activate Modes and Routines automations.

      The more significant enhancements remain unclear.

      Samsung has not yet made an official announcement regarding the tracker, and much of its internal specifications remain undisclosed. SamMobile anticipates features like Bluetooth, UWB, Samsung Find integration, and some degree of water and dust resistance, along with the possibility of Bluetooth 6.0 for improved tracking precision. However, similar to other leaks, these features are not yet confirmed.

      Battery life will also be something to monitor. The SmartTag 2 operates on a replaceable CR2032 battery with a lifespan of up to 500 days, and Samsung claims it can last up to 40% longer in Power Saving Mode. While a smaller squircle body with Ring LED lighting might look sleeker, I would prefer the convenience of a functional design. With the anticipated launch of the Galaxy S26 FE and Galaxy Tab S12 series later this year, the tracker may debut alongside these devices.
