Sony is steering PlayStation toward a fully digital future, ignoring the protests.

Sony has finalized its decision to phase out physical game discs for PlayStation. In spite of the backlash from fans over the past month, the company has reaffirmed that it will proceed with this controversial choice. During the latest earnings briefing, Sony CFO Lin Tao addressed the criticism, confirming plans to end the production of physical discs for new PlayStation releases starting January 2028.

Tao recognized the strong feelings players have regarding physical media but noted that Sony took significant time to evaluate this decision before arriving at their conclusion. Nevertheless, the ultimate message remained unchanged.

      Sony has acknowledged the objections.

At the beginning of this month, Sony announced the upcoming cutoff. Games released prior to January 2028 will not be affected, and existing physical copies will still function. New releases following the cutoff will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and retailers. This announcement has faced substantial opposition from collectors and advocates for preservation. According to Kotaku, the physical-games group DoesItPlay is organizing a week-long boycott of PlayStation for mid-August as part of their protest.

Players have valid reasons for caring about more than just having a plastic case on a shelf. Physical copies can be resold or shared with friends. Apart from being more accessible as second-hand purchases, a significant advantage is that physical copies help preserve video games. This aspect is likely one of the key reasons for the backlash. Sony recently revealed that the PS3 and PS Vita stores will halt new purchases globally in July 2027, although previously purchased content will remain downloadable for the foreseeable future.

Sony indeed has data supporting its shift toward digital distribution. In the quarter that ended on June 30, 82% of full-game sales for PS4 and PS5 were digital downloads. However, this still means around 18% of purchases were for physical copies. With 125 million monthly active users on the platform, this is not an audience that can simply be ignored.

Sony's digital sales ratio was also at 83% during the same quarter last year, indicating a slight decrease in digital share year-over-year. Retailers still play a role in Sony's strategy, although the product on the shelf may eventually serve merely as packaging.

Tao mentioned that publishers could continue to sell boxes that contain digital codes in markets like North America. He also asserted that having a disc drive does not set PlayStation apart from gaming PCs, referencing affordability, curated content, and a stable gaming environment instead. For those hoping that protests would preserve PlayStation discs, the response leaves little room for hope.

GTA 6 dominates November, unless the Ocarina of Time Remake has other plans.

If any game could launch alongside GTA 6, it would be the Ocarina of Time Remake.

When a major studio or publisher releases a legacy AAA title, other developers typically steer clear of the same launch window to avoid losing sales to the more popular game. Therefore, when Grand Theft Auto 6 finally revealed its release date, it was clear that no other games would be released during that month. However, a different game developer might be challenging it with a potential blockbuster of their own. A recent discovery on Nintendo’s UK store has ignited speculation that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake may debut on November 12, just seven days before GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19.

Nvidia’s RTX 50 GPUs are about to see prices nearly double from their launch costs.

Reported price increases on Nvidia's RTX 50-series GPUs show that some cards have nearly doubled in price since launch, largely driven by demand in AI data centers.

I recall when a $999 GPU felt like the premium but justifiable option, something buyers saved for months to acquire for their dream gaming PCs. Nvidia is about to make that price seem reasonable again. Reports from January indicated that
