      If you once relied on Winamp as your preferred music player, there’s news that may delight you. Winamp has revealed a collaboration with Deezer that will introduce music streaming to its upcoming player. This new music player is expected to be released sometime in the first half of 2027.

      What changes can we expect with the new Winamp music player?

      Through this partnership, Deezer will supply its white-label streaming technology and an extensive global music catalog. This provision equips Winamp with the necessary tools to launch its own premium subscription service.

      The exciting part is that Winamp is not forsaking what made it unique. Your local music library, internet radio stations, podcasts, and personal cloud collections will remain integrated alongside the new streaming catalog in a single, cohesive player.

      This time, Winamp is offering a highly customizable interface and innovative social features within one music application, eliminating the need for multiple apps for different functionalities. Winamp CEO Alexandre Saboundjian states that the aim is to consolidate everything users wish to listen to in one location, all under the familiar Winamp branding they grew up with.

      Will Winamp’s return be successful this time around?

      That’s a valid question, and some historical context can provide insight. Winamp attempted a redesign centered around artists in 2023, which did not resonate well. Subsequently, its source code was made public in 2024, only to face licensing issues that obstructed that endeavor as well.

      This isn’t the first time Saboundjian has made similar promises. In 2019, he made an almost identical commitment to consolidate music, podcasts, and streaming radio after Winamp's acquisition in 2014.

      However, Winamp is optimistic that this time will differ, supported by actual streaming infrastructure rather than just superficial improvements. With over 40 million active users of the free desktop player today, it is clear that Winamp still enjoys a dedicated fanbase eager for its revival.

      Whether this nostalgia converts into paying subscribers will be the true challenge, but for long-time fans, this genuinely feels like a comeback worth celebrating.
