      Mercedes-Benz has just upgraded its smallest SUV significantly. The automaker has revealed the revamped 2028 GLA, the entry-level compact SUV, which will be available in both fully electric and hybrid variants. Similar to the recently refreshed CLA sedan, the GLA is built on Mercedes’ next-generation MMA platform.

      The electric lineup offers two trims, with meaningful differences based on driving style. The GLA250+ features a single motor with 268 horsepower, focusing on extended range rather than speed. In contrast, the GLA350 includes an additional motor for all-wheel drive, increasing power to 349 horsepower and reducing the 0 to 60 mph time to just 5.3 seconds.

      Both models are equipped with an 85-kWh battery and utilize Mercedes’ 800-volt architecture. They support peak charging rates of 320 kilowatts, capable of adding over 160 miles in just a few minutes. The GLA250+ is rated for up to 408 miles according to Europe’s WLTP standard, though more realistic estimates for the US are around 350 miles.

      If electric isn’t the preferred option, a hybrid version will be available shortly, offered as either the front-wheel-drive GLA220 or the all-wheel-drive GLA250. Both variants incorporate a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine coupled with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, similar to the hybrid configuration in the CLA. However, specific power metrics for the hybrid models have yet to be released. The GLA also boasts an extended wheelbase of 2.4 inches and an additional six inches in overall length, improving passenger space.

      Inside, the dashboard is predominantly digital. An optional Superscreen encompasses a 14-inch display for passengers next to a corresponding central touchscreen and a 10.3-inch driver’s display. The MBUX virtual assistant integrates both Google Gemini and ChatGPT, continuing the conversational AI strategy that Mercedes first showcased with Gemini in the CLA.

      Reports from Car and Driver also mention a transparent hood camera for detecting obstacles, along with an optional Sky Control roof that can dim in sections and illuminate with 172 small stars.

      Mercedes has yet to release US pricing, though European electric models are set to become available this summer. American customers will need to wait until the latter half of 2027 for either powertrain to hit dealerships.
