The Galaxy Z Fold 8 series has introduced a feature that every Android foldable should include.
No more dealing with manual rotation lock; Samsung's foldables have gotten an upgrade.
Samsung's foldable devices continue to introduce small enhancements that improve user experience, and this recent update could be my favorite. A Reddit user, ultima40, has pointed out that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra now maintain separate rotation lock settings for each screen.
So, if you frequently fold and unfold your device throughout the day, alternating between the cover screen and the tablet-like inner display, your phone will remember your preferred orientation for both screens.
If you like the inner screen of the Fold 8 Ultra in landscape mode, simply set it once, and it will remain that way every time you open your phone—no need to adjust the rotation lock again.
Wasn’t this feature available before?
You could achieve a similar outcome previously, but only by accessing Routines and manually setting your device to lock a particular orientation each time it closed. It worked, but it felt more like a workaround than a genuine feature.
It's quite impressive that the rotation lock now recalls and activates based on your saved preferences for each screen on the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Very impressive!
Having this feature integrated within One UI enhances the overall experience, making it much smoother and more user-friendly. We tested it on our own Galaxy Z Fold 8, and it functioned perfectly. I can finally read articles in portrait mode on my Fold without having to adjust the rotation lock.
Will older models receive this update too?
There doesn't seem to be any significant hardware reason that this feature should be restricted to the newest Fold models. Hopefully, Samsung will expand this capability to older Fold devices when the One UI 9 update is rolled out more broadly. It’s a minor adjustment, but such small improvements are what really reduce frustrations with foldables.
This isn't the only enhancement Samsung has incorporated into its foldables recently. It was also revealed that the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8 support a new USB webcam feature. With this addition and the new rotation memory, it's evident that Samsung is continuously enhancing its foldable software with features that matter to everyday users.
