      The artificial Bolsonaro appeared in a video during the launch of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign in São Paulo. It explicitly identified itself as AI-generated while endorsing Flávio as the designated successor to carry on his father's political legacy. Flávio is challenging incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil’s elections set for October.

      The digital avatar asserted that confinement could not stifle the movement Bolsonaro had established. This assertion has led to a legal dispute regarding the use of AI as a political representative for someone barred from communicating with voters.

      A coalition of left-leaning and center-left parties has approached Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court to look into the video. The complaint claims that election regulations forbid synthetic reproductions of actual individuals when they could sway voters or jeopardize the election's integrity.

      Brazilian election laws mandate that campaigns must clearly label synthetic multimedia and disclose the technology behind it. Additionally, they ban altered material that spreads false or misleading information that could undermine the electoral process. The Bolsonaro video included an AI disclosure, placing it in a complex legal gray area.

      Court president Justice Kassio Nunes Marques stated that AI can legally be utilized for campaigning, as long as it is not intended to harm anyone. He refrained from commenting on this specific case prior to the court’s review.
