Rockstar has confirmed that download codes for the PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto VI included with physical copies sold in Japan will not have an indefinite validity. According to the company's official website, these codes will expire 170 days following the game's launch on November 19, 2026. Players who fail to redeem the code by approximately May 8, 2027, could end up with just an empty game box, despite buying a physical copy. This policy is attributed to regional regulations in Japan.

Why is this limited to Japan?

Rockstar’s updated support page, first noted by Power Unlimited columnist 'Genki,' indicates that the 170-day redemption period is exclusive to Japanese PS5 product codes. Xbox users are not affected since their download codes are not similarly region-locked, and there have been no reported restrictions for other countries. Rockstar also advises that customers should purchase the game from retailers in the same region as the PlayStation account intended for code redemption.

UPDATE: It has been confirmed that in Japan, the download code for the physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI will indeed expire after 170 days due to regional laws, specifically the Japan "Payment Services Act," which necessitates that companies selling prepaid payments must register… https://t.co/pwDjh8yvfG pic.twitter.com/TJVpiP04kc— Genki✨ (@Genki_JPN) July 27, 2026

While Rockstar refers to “regional regulations,” various reports highlight Japan's rules regarding prepaid digital instruments, which impose additional compliance obligations on codes valid for six months or more. By implementing a 170-day validity, the code remains below that threshold.

Another reflection on the changing definition of physical games

This development has reignited criticism regarding the physical edition of GTA 6, which does not contain an actual game disc. Each boxed copy comes with a download code allowing players to preload the game starting November 12, prior to its official release on November 19.

For most players purchasing the game at its launch, the expiration window may not pose a problem. However, it raises issues for collectors, gift-givers, or anyone who may buy a sealed copy months later from retail shelves. More broadly, this situation exemplifies how the industry's transition to digital distribution is shifting the meaning of “owning” a physical game. A box may still appear to be a traditional physical product, but increasingly, it contains a time-sensitive code instead of a durable disc.
