The latest significant upgrade to Google Maps for Android Auto is being rolled out to more users.

      Google Maps is finally enhancing the navigation experience for Android Auto users with a bit more excitement.

      Google is expanding the availability of two much-anticipated features for Google Maps on Android Auto: Immersive Navigation and a built-in live speedometer. After several months of limited access, reports indicate that both features are now being rolled out to a wider audience, including users with stable versions of Google Maps rather than just beta versions.

      This update is part of Google's efforts to update the Android Auto navigation system. Immersive Navigation was introduced earlier this year as one of the platform’s most significant updates in years, but its release has been gradual, leaving many users without access until now. More devices are now receiving the update as part of a server-side rollout.

      The rollout is still in progress, and availability may differ by region and device, indicating that Google is gaining confidence in deploying this new experience more broadly.

      Immersive Navigation improves Google Maps by providing more detailed road designs, clearer lane guidance, and enhanced intersection details, making navigation easier to follow at a glance instead of requiring extensive focus on the map.

      In addition to the redesigned navigation interface, Google is also rolling out a live speedometer feature within Android Auto. This new feature shows the vehicle's current speed directly in Google Maps, reducing the need for drivers to alternate their focus between the infotainment system and the instrument panel in vehicles where speed information isn’t immediately visible.

      Those receiving the update will also see a change in the interface. On Android devices, the Gemini icon has replaced the Google Assistant shortcut in the top-right corner of Google Maps, reflecting Google’s shift from Assistant to Gemini across its platform.

      A server-side rollout entails that patience is still essential

      While more users are beginning to access these features, Google has not provided them through a standard app update. Instead, it seems the rollout is happening on the server side, meaning that installing the latest version of Google Maps or Android Auto does not guarantee immediate access. Reports indicate that the features are rolling out to stable builds, making them available to a broader audience over time rather than being limited to beta testers.

      For Android Auto users, this update focuses less on introducing flashy new features and more on enhancing the everyday driving experience. Improved lane visualization, refined navigation guidance, and an integrated speedometer are all incremental advancements, but collectively, they enhance Google Maps as a more comprehensive in-car navigation solution.
