OpenAI is creating 250 new positions in Dublin as Ireland experiences a decline in tech jobs due to AI developments in other regions.

OpenAI is broadening its European headquarters in Dublin by adding 250 new jobs and securing an 88,000-square-foot lease at the Tropical Fruit Warehouse located in the city's Docklands. Currently, the company has approximately 100 employees in Ireland and established its European operations there in 2023. The new positions cover various fields including engineering, sales, user operations, HR, finance, privacy, and legal. OpenAI has stated that this expansion is fueled by “rapidly growing demand from users, customers and developers across the European region.”

The timing is significant, as both Meta and TikTok have recently announced job cuts in Ireland, citing AI as a contributing factor. The Irish tech sector has been notably impacted by AI-related layoffs. Companies that create AI solutions, which often lead to job eliminations, and those that are hiring to implement these tools are both located in the same Dublin area. OpenAI obtained US approval for a broad deployment of GPT-5.6 following weeks of government evaluations, and the Dublin expansion positions the company to market this capability across Europe with local personnel knowledgeable about EU regulations.

Additionally, Anthropic is also increasing its workforce in Dublin. The country is home to the European headquarters of major companies such as Meta, Apple, and Alphabet, as well as numerous large US tech firms, all attracted by an English-speaking workforce, access to the EU single market, and a historically favorable corporate tax environment. The presence of both OpenAI and Anthropic in Dublin creates a hub for frontier AI talent that was not available two years ago.

“Ireland’s talent base and strong research ecosystem puts us in a strong position to take advantage of the AI revolution,” stated Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin. Anthropic has confidentially filed for an IPO this year, and both companies are establishing their European operations in preparation for potential public offerings that will require demonstrated international revenue. Being located in Dublin provides them with a regulatory foothold within the jurisdiction of the EU’s AI Act and access to a talent pool already trained by the tech firms that are currently reducing their workforce. While the 250 jobs created by OpenAI may not completely offset the thousands of positions lost in Ireland, they indicate the origins of new job opportunities.
