OpenAI is creating 250 jobs in Dublin as Ireland experiences a decline in tech positions due to AI shifts elsewhere.

      OpenAI is enhancing its European headquarters in Dublin by introducing 250 new positions and leasing 88,000 square feet at the Tropical Fruit Warehouse in the city's Docklands. Currently, the company has about 100 employees in Ireland and established its European operations there in 2023. The new job openings cover various fields including engineering, sales, user operations, HR, finance, privacy, and legal. OpenAI stated that this expansion is driven by the increasing demand from users, customers, and developers throughout Europe.

      The timing of the expansion is significant, as both Meta and TikTok recently announced job reductions in Ireland, with AI being a contributing factor. The tech sector in Ireland has seen a notable impact from AI-related layoffs. The companies that are developing the AI technologies resulting in job cuts and those hiring to utilize these tools are situated in the same Dublin area. OpenAI received US approval for a wide-ranging rollout of GPT-5.6 following weeks of government testing, and the Dublin expansion allows the company to offer this capability across Europe with a local workforce familiar with EU regulations.

      Similarly, Anthropic is also growing its workforce in Dublin. Ireland serves as the European headquarters for major companies such as Meta, Apple, Alphabet, and numerous other large US tech firms, attracted by English-speaking talent, access to the EU single market, and a historically favorable corporate tax environment. The presence of OpenAI and Anthropic in Dublin fosters a concentration of advanced AI talent that was not prevalent two years ago.

      "Ireland’s talent pool and robust research ecosystem position us strongly to capitalize on the AI revolution,” remarked Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin. Anthropic has confidentially initiated an IPO process this year, and both firms are establishing their European operations ahead of possible public listings, which will necessitate verifiable international revenue. While the 250 positions created by OpenAI may not fully compensate for the thousands of jobs lost in Ireland, they indicate where new employment opportunities are emerging.
