Nerd’s Chalk discovered this wording during an APK breakdown of Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1. Although this feature is not yet active, Google’s explanation leaves much less to interpretation.
What the updated warning indicates
The previous summary generally addressed screen automation related to user activity but did not make clear the level of control a permitted app might have.
The new wording is straightforward. An authorized app could view and engage with content from specified apps while the screen is locked. An additional permission could enable it to utilize on-screen information to provide proactive suggestions.
These permissions in Android suggest that Google is designing assistants capable of continuing to perform tasks even after you set your phone down. This ease of use would necessitate trusting an app with the data visible in the services you've approved.
How Google might mitigate the risks
Google is also planning an additional approval step. The trusted pairing process could require users to verify their identity via a PIN before linking an app.
Users may still be able to adjust specific capabilities afterward. You could choose to permit proactive suggestions while revoking locked-screen access, rather than terminating the entire pairing.
The incomplete code doesn't provide a precise picture of what users can expect. Google may modify the arrangement or limit permissions before releasing anything to the public version of Android.
Why the warning is significant now
While a PIN could stop someone from easily authorizing the permission, it cannot evaluate whether an app should have that level of access. Users must still make that determination independently, often before understanding what an assistant will do with that information.
The simplest test is clear. If you wouldn’t trust an app with authorized content displayed on your unlocked screen, don’t permit it to continue accessing it once your phone is locked.
