      The US government has now officially weighed in (via The Washington Post), and I believe the implications are more significant than many realize.

      Why did the NHTSA decline to investigate Tesla while agreeing to establish new regulations?

      The agency is already investigating door-release systems in the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, making it impractical to open another investigation due to wasted time and resources.

      Instead, NHTSA's decision to pursue rulemaking for industry-wide federal safety standards on emergency door exit systems is, in my opinion, much more impactful.

      All automakers using electronic door releases, not solely Tesla, will eventually fall under whatever regulations emerge from this process. Regulators notably pointed out the necessity for a more "robust and obvious" egress system, a gentler way of stating that the current arrangements are inadequate.

      So, do Tesla owners see any immediate changes?

      Unfortunately, no. That's the disappointing aspect. Federal rulemaking can take years, and new standards generally apply only to future vehicle designs.

      Current Tesla owners remain in limbo unless the ongoing NHTSA investigations result in a recall. Earlier this year, Congress introduced the SAFE Exit Act, linking it to 15 deaths associated with difficult-to-locate manual releases, but it has yet to pass.

      What is particularly frustrating is that Tesla already provides more noticeable mechanical emergency releases for some of its vehicles sold in China. This demonstrates that a solution is available and serves as a reminder that American owners are still awaiting it.

      NHTSA’s shift from a Tesla-specific investigation to broader industry rulemaking illustrates a broader regulatory challenge. As mechanical systems transition to electronic ones throughout the automotive sector, outdated safety standards are struggling to keep pace.
