Meta introduces a standalone Seller app for Facebook Marketplace featuring AI-enhanced listings.
Meta has introduced Seller, a dedicated iOS application aimed at frequent sellers on Facebook Marketplace. This app provides specialized tools for managing listings, communicating with buyers, and monitoring sales performance all in one location. Available for free on the App Store for US users aged 18 and older, the app automatically syncs with existing Marketplace listings, messages, and sales history. The launch coincides with the tenth anniversary of Marketplace, which currently sees 430 million items listed globally each month.
The main feature of the app is its AI-driven listing creation. Sellers can upload photos, and Meta AI generates the title, description, suggested price, and category, streamlining what was previously a tedious multi-step process to a quick review before publishing. Additionally, a bulk listing option allows sellers to list multiple items simultaneously, while a unified inbox organizes all buyer communications by item to ensure no messages are overlooked between the main Facebook app and the Seller app.
Seller also offers a performance dashboard that displays views, clicks, message threads, and completed sales, providing frequent sellers with data comparable to that from e-commerce platforms like eBay and Etsy, which has been largely absent from Marketplace. Currently, the app is exclusive to iOS, with plans for a web experience for users who download it and ongoing testing for Android. Social selling has increasingly become a significant income stream for many, and Meta aims for this dedicated app to retain its active sellers amid competition from platforms like TikTok Shop and Whatnot.
The launch of the Seller app is part of a larger set of Facebook updates announced simultaneously. Meta is also rolling out Facebook Verified, a free badge confirming real identities through selfie verification on Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and profile pages starting Monday. Additionally, the company is testing a full-screen, TikTok-style video feed that will greet users upon opening the Facebook app, beginning in video-centric international markets later this year, with a potential US launch in 2027.
For Meta, the hope is that Marketplace's vast scale, with over a billion active users and a decade of established shopping habits, can compete with dedicated commerce platforms if the seller experience improves. The broader transition towards AI-enhanced commerce is transforming online buying and selling, positioning Marketplace as a platform where AI handles the laborious aspects of listing, allowing sellers to focus on sourcing and shipping. Whether a standalone app is sufficient to retain prominent sellers, who are increasingly exploring other options, remains to be seen in the coming year.
