Meta withdraws from the RE100 clean energy initiative after ten years of participation as the expansion of gas infrastructure increases.
Meta has exited the RE100 initiative after ten years, unable to fulfill its renewable energy requirements due to its plans for ten natural gas plants to support its Hyperion AI data center campus in Louisiana, a project valued over $200 billion. This move marks the most significant departure from the initiative since its inception in 2014.
RE100 mandates that its members must source 100 percent of their electricity from renewable energy. Meta claimed to meet this criterion each year since 2021 by using environmental attribute certificates to align its consumption with renewable sources annually. However, the extent of its gas plans, which includes over seven gigawatts of new fossil fuel capacity for Hyperion and a 200-megawatt gas plant in Ohio, created what the Climate Group termed a structural incompatibility with ongoing membership.
The Climate Group, co-founder of RE100 with the Carbon Disclosure Project, announced that Meta had “withdrawn” because it could no longer meet the technical criteria following its investments in new gas power. Currently, 444 corporate members remain in the initiative, including Apple, Google, and Microsoft, all of which have expanded their data center operations without making gas commitments of this magnitude. Microsoft did recently enter a 20-year gas agreement with Chevron for a Texas data center, raising questions about whether other tech giants might face similar scrutiny from RE100 soon.
Meta maintains that it matches its electricity usage with “100 percent clean and renewable energy” through certificate purchases, a practice criticized by environmental analysts for being more about paper compliance than actual decarbonization. Jonathan Bruegel, an energy finance analyst at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, highlighted the discrepancy between Meta’s certificate claims and its actual energy mix, which has become evident following its exit from RE100. Additionally, Meta has struck a deal to transmit solar energy from space to its data centers starting in 2030, but this technology is still unproven on a commercial scale.
This departure highlights an ongoing tension within the AI sector. Companies that have built up renewable energy credentials over the years are now racing to secure electricity at a rate that renewables cannot keep pace with, making natural gas the default transitional fuel. Whether Meta’s exit is an isolated instance or the start of a broader trend among tech companies will hinge on how quickly the industry's power requirements exceed the renewable supply available.
