Amazon closes its AGI Lab amid new AI job cuts.
Amazon is stepping back from the competition to develop the most advanced AI. This week, it shut down its AGI Lab in San Francisco, which was focused on artificial general intelligence, as reported by The Information. This decision was part of layoffs within Amazon’s AGI division, as first noted by Reuters.
The lab was operational for just 18 months, having been established in December 2024 with several dozen employees. Its mission was to enhance the usefulness of AI agents for businesses. Now, it has been disbanded, and the individuals who contributed to its creation are being let go, although the full extent of the layoffs is still unclear.
Amazon presents this move as a way to streamline focus rather than a retreat. A spokesperson stated, “We’ve been developing large AI models for several years, and it continues to be one of our top priorities.” The company is “narrowing our focus on the initiatives that are most important for our customers.” This realignment has resulted in “the elimination of certain positions within parts of our AGI organization.”
Changes at the top took place prior to the cuts, with Rohit Prasad, who led Amazon’s AGI efforts, departing at the end of last year, followed by David Luan, head of the AGI Lab, in February. Subsequently, Amazon integrated its AGI operations under Peter DeSantis, along with its chip and quantum teams.
This trend isn’t new, marking the latest in a series of job reductions since Amazon laid off 16,000 employees in January. Tech companies are scaling back their teams, often citing AI as a reason. The swift departure of two leaders and the closure of an entire lab speaks volumes.
Amazon has invested heavily in AI but rarely at the cutting edge. Its own models haven’t made a significant impact, and its primary strategy revolves around AWS and substantial investments in AI infrastructure. While competitors aim to create the smartest models, Amazon focuses on providing the necessary resources and tools, as well as business-integrated agents. Its major investment strategy lies externally, with tens of billions allocated to Anthropic.
There is also a growing skepticism in the background, with an increasing number of voices asserting that today’s large language models do not lead to true general intelligence. Whether Amazon shares this perspective or is simply pursuing profit, the outcome is similar. The company that seeks to empower others’ AI ambitions has stopped pursuing the development of the most advanced AI itself. Its current goals now center on selling AI solutions rather than creating them.
