Jensen Huang earned $172 billion from selling AI chips. He has just donated $75 million to an art school.

Jensen and Lori Huang have contributed $75 million to Vanderbilt University to create the Jen-Hsun and Lori Huang College of Art, Architecture and Design in San Francisco. This is Huang's largest donation to a university, which is part of a matching gift initiative that has already generated over $100 million in additional funding from alumni and various donors, including prominent figures in the Bay Area arts scene. Previously, Huang had given more than $50 million to Oregon State, his alma mater. Both Jensen and Lori Huang have backgrounds in engineering.

The new college is set to open in 2027 on the former California College of the Arts campus in Potrero Hill, building on CCA's nearly 120-year history. Vanderbilt intends to create a California College of the Arts Institute to maintain CCA's legacy. The campus aims to accommodate around 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students, focusing on engineering, entrepreneurship, and design. A national search is currently ongoing for the college's founding dean. The San Francisco campus forms a part of Vanderbilt's broader expansion plan, which includes a new undergraduate campus in New York City set to open this autumn and a graduate campus planned for West Palm Beach.

This donation reflects where the individual instrumental in the AI boom sees true value. AI has demonstrated that its most culturally significant uses require artistic judgment rather than sheer computational power, as seen when Google utilized Veo and Gemini to recreate a lost goal by Pelé. Huang has publicly stated that AI will increase the demand for creative skills. Thus, funding an art school with proceeds from the tech industry is a direct way to support this notion.

Nvidia's market capitalization peaked at $4.86 trillion recently, and a signed leather jacket belonging to Huang was auctioned at Sotheby’s for $960,000 last week—96 times its original retail value—transforming a CEO's wardrobe into a coveted item. The contribution to the art school represents a unique investment in culture: $75 million aimed at ensuring that those trained in AI tools also understand their practical applications. The challenge for Vanderbilt will be to establish how effectively a college brandished with a tech executive’s name can legitimately address these educational goals when it opens.
