Previously, companies awaited graduates to enter their offices. Now, they are looking further back, targeting undergraduates, and increasingly focusing on teenagers in hopes of identifying exceptional talent before others do.
Why are companies interested in teenagers now?
The concise answer is a significant talent shortage. McKinsey estimates that China may face a shortfall of 5 million AI workers by 2030, and currently, there are more vacancies in AI than there are qualified candidates to fill them. Tencent has recently initiated training camps for students aged 13 to 18, covering topics ranging from AI product management to quantum computing. ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming has taken it a step further by co-founding a program that selects just 30 students each year as full-time trainees.
Geely has revamped its recruitment strategy entirely. The automaker is now hiring students straight out of high school, providing training in AI and electric vehicle technology alongside their studies, and guaranteeing them a job at a salary equivalent to that of a fresh graduate upon completion.
Does this imply that a degree is becoming less significant?
MiniMax, one of China's prominent AI startups, states that it isn't yet hiring high school graduates, but it no longer considers a degree as a strict necessity. The company values curiosity and inherent ability over academic credentials.
This transformation is not exclusive to China. Google co-founder Sergey Brin has mentioned that the company is increasingly open to hiring individuals without a bachelor's degree. Ultimately, AI is not just altering the nature of jobs; it is reshaping who is eligible for them. Academic qualifications, age, and traditional resumes are starting to take a back seat to raw talent and curiosity.
