The company announced today that it has started supplying a new tandem OLED panel for laptops that meets VESA's newly established DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification, the most stringent brightness standard for OLED panels so far. This update directly addresses those who have found their laptop displays lackluster in outdoor settings.
What improvements does True Black 1400 offer?
Consider it as the familiar deep, rich blacks of OLED, significantly boosted in brightness. The new certification requires a peak brightness of 1,400 nits while maintaining black levels at 0.0005 nits, which is a 40% increase over the previous True Black 1000 certification.

Samsung's panel surpasses this, reaching up to 1,600 nits at the panel level, making it over 40% brighter than the single-layer OLED panels commonly used in most laptops today. How is Samsung achieving increased brightness without risking burnout?
The key lies in the tandem design, a method Apple has utilized for a long time in its iPad Pros. Instead of relying on a single organic light-emitting layer, Samsung stacks two layers, allowing the panel to share the workload. This approach enables higher brightness levels without overstressing any one layer, and it also suggests that the panel should have a longer lifespan compared to a standard single-layer OLED under normal laptop usage.

Samsung also attributes enhanced performance to newly developed organic materials used in the panel. The Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition is the first laptop featuring this display, now certified with True Black 1400.
ASUS, Dell Technologies, and MSI are anticipated to release their laptops equipped with this panel between now and next year. Samsung Display plans to showcase the panel at K-Display 2026 in Seoul, happening from July 22 to 24, where attendees can experience the brightness firsthand.
