NotebookLM has received a new name and a significant upgrade for subscribers of Google AI Pro.
The Gemini Notebook, as it is now named, will soon introduce features that were launched on the Ultra tier last month to Pro users in the next few weeks.
Google is discontinuing the NotebookLM branding, transitioning the AI research tool to Gemini Notebook, incorporating one of the company's most valuable products more fully into its primary AI brand. Along with this rebranding, Google is extending one of the tool's most robust features to a broader user base, a capability that was previously available only to subscribers of the Google AI Ultra plan.
An anticipated upgrade for Pro users
Last month, NotebookLM received a significant update, granting every notebook a dedicated cloud computing environment capable of writing and executing code based on users' uploaded content. It also transitioned to a new reasoning engine and enhanced support for generating a variety of outputs, such as PDFs, spreadsheets, slide decks, and data visualizations. However, this update was initially accessible only to Google AI Ultra subscribers and select Workspace business accounts.
With the rebranding to Gemini Notebook, Google is now extending these enhancements to additional users, with Pro plan members expected to receive it in the web version within the coming weeks. Google has yet to provide an estimated timeline for when these features might become available to free tier users, if at all.
Gemini Notebook will be more widely accessible
The new title is just one aspect of how Google is integrating NotebookLM into the Gemini ecosystem. In April, the company expanded access to notebooks within the main Gemini app, allowing users to conveniently import saved research and sources into chat. Additionally, Google plans to enable notebook access through AI Mode in Search, although a timeline for this rollout has not been disclosed.
Since its introduction at I/O 2023 as Project Tailwind, NotebookLM has developed into a tool that Google now considers part of its fundamental AI offerings. The rebranding to Gemini Notebook symbolizes this shift, with the actual transformation being how extensively Google is embedding it into its other products, including the Gemini app and Search.
OpenAI aims to enhance ChatGPT's safety for teens by implementing new parental controls, which include features like Quiet Hours, Study Mode defaults, and notifications for serious account violations. OpenAI believes that it is essential for teens to have access to AI, arguing that keeping them away from it would leave them unprepared for a cornerstone technology of their generation. Approximately 90% of teens already use ChatGPT weekly for educational purposes, research, or organization, prompting OpenAI to advocate for access alongside robust protections designed for their age group.
If you have ever misplaced a valuable ChatGPT response amid your extensive chat history, that frustration has finally been addressed. OpenAI has introduced a significant search enhancement that allows users to locate old chats, projects, documents, and images from a single interface. Previously, the sidebar search feature only retrieved past conversations, excluding uploaded files, projects, and generated images. The new search functionality is now accessible across web, iOS, and Android platforms for all ChatGPT plans, including free accounts.
Google has enhanced AI Mode in Search by allowing users to link third-party applications, making it more efficient. Starting this week in the US, users can securely connect some of their favorite apps directly to AI Mode, enabling Search to perform tasks for them rather than just providing answers. This update builds on a similar feature already introduced in the Gemini app, and is now being implemented in Search. The initial rollout includes three partner apps: Instacart, Canva, and YouTube Music, with Google indicating that more app integrations are forthcoming.
