Meta AI will involve parents when teenagers talk about self-harm.
Human reviewers will examine flagged teen chats prior to parents receiving alerts regarding self-harm.

AI chatbots have significantly eased the process of discussing sensitive topics that individuals might find difficult to share with others. For teenagers, these topics may include personal issues like anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and suicide.
Meta is introducing an additional layer of protection for these discussions. The company will notify parents when a monitored teen appears to be in severe distress while interacting with Meta AI, offering families the opportunity to intervene before matters escalate.
How will these alerts function?
Meta AI already guides teens toward crisis helplines and prompts them to reach out to a parent, counselor, or a trusted adult when discussions imply potential self-harm. With the new system, Meta will also inform the supervising parent. A specialized detection system will search for direct or subtle mentions of suicide and self-harm, although alerts will not be triggered immediately.

Each flagged chat will undergo a review by a human moderator. Meta asserts that they will prioritize caution when a teen's intentions are ambiguous, meaning parents may sometimes get alerts even if there is no imminent risk. They will also receive expert resources on how to engage in these conversations.
What occurs in more critical situations?
Meta is also developing a protocol to contact emergency services when discussions involving a teen or adult indicate an immediate risk of suicide. The company already implements a similar system for worrying posts on Facebook and Instagram.

The organization consulted with over 75 clinicians specializing in adolescent mental health to refine how Meta AI handles these interactions. Its stricter Limited Content setting will also be applied to AI chats, enabling parents to restrict a wider array of sensitive topics.
ChatGPT introduced similar parental notifications and safety features last year, and recently expanded this concept to adults through Trusted Contact. As individuals become more open to discussing their intimate problems with AI, chatbots are increasingly becoming involved in conversations they cannot safely manage on their own.
Research has demonstrated the potential negative outcomes of such interactions. A study led by Stanford highlighted cases where AI systems perpetuated thoughts of self-harm or violence instead of guiding vulnerable users toward support, particularly during lengthy and emotionally charged exchanges. Meta’s new measures allow parents, clinicians, and emergency responders a chance to intervene when a chatbot exceeds its safe operational limits.

OpenAI aims to enhance ChatGPT's safety for teenagers, with changes that extend beyond a basic content filter. In a recent update, the company expressed its viewpoint on why teens should have access to AI, arguing that completely isolating them from it would leave them unprepared for a significant technology of their era. Nearly 90% of teens already utilize ChatGPT weekly for educational, research, or organizational purposes, which is why OpenAI believes that access should come with genuine protections tailored to their age.
