Your OnePlus phone will be transitioning to ColorOS, regardless of your preference.
OnePlus has announced that OxygenOS is being discontinued, and eligible devices will have the opportunity to upgrade to ColorOS 17 once it is released.
OnePlus stated that users of compatible devices will be able to voluntarily transition to ColorOS 17 when it becomes available. The company presented this change as a strategy to enhance development efficiency and accelerate updates by consolidating resources with its parent company, Oppo.
This change has been anticipated for some time. Back in 2021, OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau hinted at the future of OxygenOS by revealing plans to merge engineering resources with Oppo. This merger unified the underlying code for OxygenOS and ColorOS, although OnePlus maintained a distinct user experience for a period. Since then, each OxygenOS update has increasingly resembled ColorOS, and a recent report had already indicated the complete phasing out of OxygenOS before OnePlus officially confirmed it.
India is also affected by this software transition.
Alongside the exit announcement, OnePlus released a separate statement directed at its community in India, dispelling rumors about an operational shutdown and assuring that the company would continue its regular business activities in the region. However, this assurance pertains to hardware and retail presence, not software. The transition to ColorOS will occur in India just as it does in other regions.
Eligible OnePlus devices in India will also have the option to upgrade to ColorOS 17 upon its release, marking the definitive end of OxygenOS. For many years, OxygenOS has been a significant attraction for OnePlus enthusiasts. With its discontinuation, it remains to be seen if the brand can maintain its customer loyalty in the markets where it continues to sell smartphones.
