Microsoft will cease OneDrive synchronization on older versions of Windows 10 next month.
Microsoft will discontinue OneDrive sync support for Windows 10 versions earlier than 22H2 on August 15. After that date, users with older versions will not receive any further updates, bug fixes, or security patches for the sync app. While the service will not cease operations immediately, Microsoft warns that "future functionality is not guaranteed." Windows 10 22H2, which is the last version of Windows 10, will continue to receive OneDrive sync updates until October 10, 2028. Microsoft stated that this change "aligns OneDrive support with the Windows lifecycle policy" and allows the company to focus its ongoing resources on supported operating systems. Additionally, Microsoft 365 file synchronization services will also be impacted on older versions.
Users with pre-22H2 versions will need to either upgrade to Windows 10 22H2, transition to Windows 11, or utilize OneDrive's web interface, which is less user-friendly than desktop sync. Since 2026, Microsoft has been streamlining its Windows ecosystem, making AI features optional for some while withdrawing support for others. Alternatives such as Nextcloud continue to support Windows 10 back to version 1809 and are also compatible with Linux. Nadella's restructuring of Microsoft emphasizes AI-driven products, and discontinuing support for older configurations is part of reallocating resources toward that goal.
