The UK has recently suggested implementing a midnight curfew for teenagers on social media, which they can easily circumvent in a matter of seconds.
The UK government has proposed a curfew for social media usage among 16- and 17-year-olds, restricting access to platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube from midnight to 6 AM. However, there is an easy workaround to bypass this restriction, as reported by the BBC.
A curfew teens can bypass
This curfew is part of a broader initiative in the UK aimed at regulating social media use among teenagers. Earlier this year, the government considered a total ban on social media access for individuals under 16, with police advocating for the removal of features they deemed risky for younger users.
The current proposal focuses on older teenagers and employs a less stringent method. Since opting out is straightforward, the effectiveness of the curfew depends on teenagers choosing not to alter their settings. Critics have highlighted this loophole, with one campaigner arguing that the plan does not constitute a genuine restriction due to the simplicity of the workaround. Social media analyst Matt Navarra expressed to the BBC that the policy is essentially a minor settings prompt masquerading as regulation.
The policy does not target VPNs
Additionally, the UK's attempt to control teen social media usage does not include restrictions on VPNs, which allow users to alter their location and evade such limitations entirely. This method has already been utilized to circumvent similar rules in other regions. The UK government has indicated that its research revealed limited use of VPNs among teens attempting to bypass restrictions, and for the moment, it is not pursuing action on this front.
“We have decided not to limit VPNs,” Online Safety Minister Kanishka Narayan stated on #BBCBreakfast, confirming that the government won't impose restrictions on Virtual Private Networks as part of the social media ban for those under 16, despite initial considerations for action.
The government intends to present the new regulations to Parliament by the end of 2026, aiming to implement them alongside the ban for those under 16 in the following spring. It remains to be seen whether either policy will significantly alter social media habits among teenagers in the UK.
