Roblox introduces Build, a mobile feature that converts text prompts into interactive games.
Roblox introduced Build, a mobile-first AI creation feature that transforms text prompts into basic playable games, starting its alpha phase in New Zealand on July 28. On Wednesday, Roblox revealed this new creation tab within the mobile app, enabling anyone to create a game without using Roblox Studio or writing any code. Users can input descriptions, such as a cozy forest adventure with obstacles, and Build will create a starting point that includes gameplay mechanics, environment, characters, sounds, and visuals. The public alpha testing is open on July 28 for age-verified users aged nine and above.
Build is integrated with Roblox Studio, allowing creators to begin a project on mobile and later refine it on desktop with the full set of Studio tools or check progress on mobile after launching agents from Studio. This system utilizes a combination of open-source and proprietary Roblox AI models trained on a uniquely extensive set of 3D models and gaming-related data. The Cube foundation model, which Roblox introduced earlier this year, generates game-ready objects capable of functioning as expected without manual coding.
Roblox acknowledged the quality concerns associated with simplifying game creation. The company explained that its discovery system ranks games based on long-term retention rather than recency or volume, ensuring that games with no players won't appear on the homepage, irrespective of their creation method. Games created with Build will undergo the same safety checks and retention-based ranking as all other Roblox games, with an additional review process for those aimed at younger audiences before being included in the Roblox Kids or Select catalogues.
In conjunction with Build, Roblox will launch a variety of agentic tools for professional creators in the coming months. These tools include a playtesting agent to identify bugs before players encounter them, an analytics agent to provide insights on game performance in simple terms, and an experiment agent to determine tests that can enhance engagement and monetization. Additionally, a new scene-generation model is in development to create entire editable and playable 3D environments from a single text prompt.
This announcement occurs amid an influx of AI-generated content on various platforms, which has led to an 84 percent increase in App Store submissions and prompted Apple to take action against low-quality AI-generated applications. Roblox believes that its retention-based discovery system will naturally filter for quality, highlighting only games that players genuinely wish to continue playing.
A basic version of Build will be available for free, with paid options for power users. Upon completion of the New Zealand alpha, the rollout will extend to additional regions, and Roblox plans to announce more creation tool updates in the upcoming months. The platform currently boasts 132 million daily active users, all of whom can now prototype games from their mobile devices.
