Roblox introduces Build, a mobile feature that converts text prompts into games that can be played.
TL;DR: Roblox introduced Build, a mobile-first AI creation tab that allows users to create games from text prompts, with the public alpha starting in New Zealand on July 28.
On Wednesday, Roblox unveiled Build, a new feature within the mobile app that enables anyone to transform a text prompt into a simple playable game without needing to use Roblox Studio or write any code. A user can describe a concept like a cozy forest adventure with environmental challenges, and Build will produce a foundation that includes gameplay mechanics, environment, characters, sounds, and visual style. This feature will begin public alpha testing in New Zealand on July 28 for users aged nine and older who have verified their age.
Build operates using the same backend as Roblox Studio, allowing creators to initiate a project on their mobile device and later refine it on a desktop using the complete Studio toolset, or to launch agents from Studio and monitor progress via mobile. The system utilizes a combination of open-source and proprietary AI models developed by Roblox, trained on a notably extensive set of 3D models and gaming-specific information. Roblox's Cube foundation model, introduced earlier this year along with agentic Studio tools, creates game-ready objects capable of driving, shooting, or behaving appropriately without the need for manual scripting.
Roblox acknowledges the potential quality concerns associated with making game creation more accessible. The company states that its discovery system evaluates games based on long-term retention rather than recency or volume, ensuring that titles with no player engagement will not appear on the homepage, regardless of their creation method. Games made through Build will undergo the same safety evaluations and retention-based discovery ranking as other Roblox games, with titles aimed at younger audiences receiving a more thorough review before they are included in the Roblox Kids or Select catalogues.
In addition to Build, Roblox will be releasing a range of agentic tools for professional creators in the coming months. These will include a playtesting agent to identify bugs ahead of player encounters, an analytics agent that provides straightforward answers regarding game performance, and an experiment agent that suggests tests to enhance engagement and monetization. A new model for scene generation is also being developed, capable of creating entire editable and playable 3D environments from a single text prompt.
This announcement arrives as AI-generated content inundates platforms, often outpacing review systems' ability to manage it, resulting in an 84 percent increase in App Store submissions and prompting Apple to take action against subpar AI-generated apps. Roblox believes its retention-based discovery system will function as a natural quality filter, showcasing only games that players are inclined to continue playing.
A basic version of Build will be free, with premium options available for advanced users. The rollout will extend to additional regions following the New Zealand alpha, and Roblox has indicated it plans to announce more creation tools in the coming months. The platform boasts 132 million daily active users, any of whom can now prototype a game directly from their phone.
