The public beta of iOS 27 has arrived, and you can access it without needing a developer account.

Greg Joswiak has officially announced that public betas for iOS 27, macOS 27, iPadOS 27, and other Apple devices are now available.

If you've been following developers' excitement about Siri AI and have been waiting for the public beta, your wait is finally over.

So, what are the actual changes with a public beta?

Apple started releasing developer betas of iOS 27 since WWDC on June 8, with updates approximately every two weeks. The third beta was released on July 6, and the public beta conveniently follows.

For those who are just tuning in, Apple typically launches its public beta shortly after the third developer build, usually within five to seven days, aligning perfectly with today's release. The main difference between the two is the level of refinement.

Developer betas are still in early stages of development and often come with significant bugs, glitches, and crashes, which I've encountered on my iPhone 17 for the past few weeks. Therefore, they aren't ideal for average users.

In contrast, public betas are more polished and refined. Most of the bugs identified in the initial testing phase have been resolved, making them relatively safer for general users to install and explore new features.

The aim of a public beta is not just about early access, but also to expand the testing base for iOS 27, facilitating the release of a stable version in September.

What can you expect from the public beta of iOS 27?

I would still advise against installing the public beta on your primary iPhone, especially if you rely on it for work. However, it’s acceptable for secondary iPhones or other devices like iPads or Apple Watches.

Regarding new features in the public beta, we've previously discussed a variety of additions and hands-on experiences. Siri AI, for example, acts as a conversational assistant with on-screen awareness and cross-app functionalities, but it requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer to function.

Photos introduces Clean Up, Extend, and Spatial Reframing to help correct crooked or cluttered images, although these features also necessitate an A17 Pro chip.

Other features include a Liquid Glass transparency slider, receipt-splitting in Wallet, and a “Notify Me” tool in Safari for page monitoring.

The final build is expected to arrive this September alongside the anticipated iPhone 18 Pro, which is typically when millions of iPhone users make their upgrades.
