Microsoft is finally addressing the biggest issue with Windows Search, but it isn't available for you to test just yet.

Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel are experiencing a revamped Search feature that finally feels less like a promotional space and more like a tool users genuinely need.

For years, Windows Search has been a frustrating experience, and I'm not exaggerating with that statement. When you open it to locate a file, you’re met with trending topics from Bing, promotions from the Microsoft Store, and a tile for AI tools that merely directs you to a web browser.

However, there are improvements on the way, although not all users will see them immediately. Microsoft is introducing a series of enhancements to Windows Search for Insiders in the Experimental channel, and this time, it's not just a superficial update.

What do these Windows Search enhancements entail?

The search home screen has been simplified. It eliminates trending topics and the "games for you" carousel, replacing them with a straightforward and less frustrating list of recent searches. While it may appear less flashy, it is also less overwhelming, avoiding the feel of opening a mini-homepage whenever you click the Windows key without needing that distraction.

The more significant improvement lies in the search results themselves. Search results now indicate the origins of each item, whether it’s from an app, a setting, a file, or a web suggestion. This means you won’t have to guess what you’re about to select.

Moreover, promotional content and sponsored product displays have been removed from web results, which has been long overdue. No one searching for a "running plan" wants a “Shop now” button mixed in with the answers.

      What else has changed?

A new setting under Settings > Privacy & Security > Search lets you completely disable web and Microsoft Store suggestions if you prefer to see only results from your own device, a feature I would enable immediately. There's also improved typo recognition, so searching for “utlook” will yield Outlook instead of leaving you with no results.

Local files and settings are now prioritized more when they are the best match, and searches for two-character files are now supported. Microsoft claims to have also included reliability fixes, addressing the crashes and loading issues that many longtime Insiders have reported over the months.

None of these changes reinvents Search; they simply help it function as it should have all along. While these updates are currently available to Insiders in the Experimental channel, they are expected to be included in a stable Windows update in the coming months.

This website is a treasure trove if you appreciate Mac menu bar applications.

It features hundreds of menu bar apps, ranging from small utilities to robust productivity tools, all in one location. The menu bar is often overlooked in macOS; it quietly occupies the top of your screen, with many users only using it to check the time and battery level. However, the right apps can transform that small area into the quickest way to accomplish tasks on your Mac.

The challenge lies in discovering those apps. The Mac App Store doesn't highlight them well, and searching through random blog posts can be tedious. While I have shared my favorite Mac utilities that include menu bar apps like Supercharge and CleanShot X, there’s an even better resource for finding the top apps for your Mac's menu bar.
