ChatGPT is targeting one of Google's most intelligent features in Chrome.

OpenAI is broadening the reach of ChatGPT beyond its website by introducing a new Chrome extension that comprehends the content of the webpage being viewed. This extension enables users to pose questions about a page, summarize articles, clarify complex ideas, and even initiate longer AI-driven tasks without leaving their browser.

This initiative positions ChatGPT as a direct rival to Google’s Gemini in Chrome, which earlier this year introduced similar features that are aware of the browsing context. While both technologies aim to integrate AI into web browsing, they adopt slightly different strategies regarding productivity and automation.

ChatGPT enters a competitive AI space initiated by Google.

As per OpenAI, the new extension allows ChatGPT to access the currently active webpage, enabling it to respond to inquiries using the page’s content for context, instead of requiring users to copy and paste text into a different chat window. Users can ask for summaries, explanations, translations, or follow-up questions while continuing their browsing experience.

Additionally, the extension facilitates longer tasks through ChatGPT’s agent capabilities, allowing users to handle more complex requests directly from their browser. OpenAI aims to keep AI assistance readily available alongside the webpage being viewed, without disrupting the browsing flow.

Google is pursuing a similar ambition with Gemini in Chrome, which operates within Chrome’s side panel. Like ChatGPT’s extension, Gemini can summarize webpages, clarify complex ideas, respond to questions about the current tab, and generate text without requiring users to switch tabs. It also utilizes the content of the active webpage to provide contextually relevant responses.

However, Gemini currently offers a deeper integration with Google’s ecosystem. In addition to analyzing webpages, it can manage up to 10 browser tabs, summarize information from multiple pages at once, and interface with Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and other Workspace applications. Google has also started to roll out Auto Browse, an agentic feature that can carry out multi-step tasks such as navigating websites, filling out forms, and making bookings with user consent.

Context-aware AI is transforming the browsing experience.

For users, the most significant advantage is convenience. Instead of pasting paragraphs into an AI chatbot, both browser assistants incorporate conversational AI directly into the browsing experience. They can clarify research papers, summarize extensive news articles, respond to queries about documentation, draft emails based on webpage content, or simplify technical information in real time.

The competition indicates a wider shift in the evolution of AI assistants. Rather than operating solely as independent chatbots, they are transforming into browser-integrated productivity tools that comprehend what users are viewing and ultimately understand their objectives.

OpenAI's Chrome extension brings ChatGPT closer to Google's browser functionality, yet Google maintains an edge through its strong integration with Chrome and Workspace. As both companies continue to enhance their agentic features, the competition is shifting from merely improving chatbots to developing smarter browsers that can read, interpret, and eventually act on behalf of users.
