Fi Ultra utilizes Starlink satellites to locate pups that stray off the grid.

A runaway dog can dash into a forest or across vast open land, leaving its owner with a GPS tracker that suddenly cannot provide location updates. However, Fi aims to address this issue with the Fi Ultra, a new dog tracker that relies on SpaceX’s Starlink network whenever cellular service is unavailable. The company claims it is the first dog tracker utilizing T-Mobile’s T-Satellite with Starlink support. It's currently available in the US for $199, along with a $20 activation fee and a $189 annual membership.

Your dog has just connected to a satellite.

The Fi Ultra integrates continuous dual-band GPS with LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and satellite connectivity. GPS identifies the dog's location, while the various wireless networks transmit that info to the Fi app. The tracker seamlessly switches between these connections, opting for T-Satellite when it strays out of a cellular service area. Fi states this enables tracking of dogs almost anywhere in the US.

Owners can activate Lost Mode within the Fi app for more frequent location updates. During an initial test by The Verge, the tracker connected to Starlink in an LTE dead zone, updating its location approximately every two to three minutes. Some reconnection intervals approached five minutes, meaning real-time tracking may involve a bit of anxious waiting in challenging situations.

Fi Ultra also introduces Fi Callback, a training tool that emits adjustable sounds and vibrations through the tracker. Dogs can learn to associate these signals with returning to their owners, without the need for electric shocks.

      Starlink impacts battery life.

Satellite connectivity consumes significantly more power than a typical pet tracker. The Ultra's 513mAh battery is estimated to last about two days, in contrast to the several weeks or even months that some standard Fi models provide. It features USB-C charging and reportedly takes under two hours to recharge.

The tracker weighs 68 grams and has dimensions of 75mm wide, 40mm tall, and 25mm thick. With IP68 and IP66K ratings, it is protected against dust, water, and saltwater. Its spring-loaded clip easily attaches to standard collars and harnesses, while owners of Fi’s Series 3 and Series 3+ collars can directly attach it to their current setup. Existing Fi members have the option to purchase the Ultra for a flat rate of $299 and continue using their current membership. This is one of those innovative pet tech products that genuinely reassures pet owners.

Waiting for a more affordable Vision Pro? New reports bring disappointing news.

Another setback for the cheaper Vision Pro.

Following a series of speculation and reports, the hope for a less expensive Vision Pro might be over. There have been delays, rumored cancellations, and even potential revivals in recent months. However, a new supply chain report indicates it may finally be time to stop anticipating it. Apple has reportedly halted development of a lower-cost display designed for a lighter, more budget-friendly Vision headset. According to the Korean outlet The Elec, Samsung Display plans to officially end the project in September. While Apple has not made any public announcements regarding the cancellation of the headset, the absence of its dedicated display diminishes the likelihood of a launch.
