PlayStation's decision to eliminate physical discs might have caught off guard the partners that are essential for sustaining its gaming business.
Sony’s alleged transition away from physical discs reportedly surprised publishers, regional teams, and retail partners, converting a gamer ownership issue into a matter of business trust.
PlayStation’s purported shift away from physical discs has already posed concerns for players who value owning their games. It now appears to complicate matters for the companies tasked with selling, supporting, and developing within Sony’s ecosystem.
According to High Chaos Run, Sony’s choice to cease physical disc production for PS5, and potentially for PS6 in 2028, occurred without prior notice to publishers and business partners, as well as some regional operations. If this is true, Sony has not only stirred up a dispute regarding PlayStation discs but has also left segments of its gaming business scrambling to adapt after the decision became public.
Who learned too late
While a digital-first future for PlayStation isn’t inherently surprising, the troubling aspect is why numerous partners allegedly were informed so late.
Despite having close working relationships with PlayStation, publishers seemed to be taken by surprise. Partners associated with Sony’s hardware cycle now face an undesirable new challenge: how to plan around a platform holder that can alter the retail model without prior warning to those involved.
Current retail landscape
The retail situation is even more challenging. Regional teams were still in discussions about physical PlayStation store plans with local distributors and investors, including an initiative in India that aimed to establish 100 stores by 2028.
This is particularly harsh if the strategy regarding discs was already shifting behind the scenes. A physical PlayStation store can continue to sell hardware, accessories, and provide brand experiences, but the value proposition diminishes when one of the main draws for visiting a game store is being eliminated.

Why players bear the consequences
Players’ primary concern naturally revolves around ownership. A digital-only PlayStation future grants Sony greater authority over game sales and the implications when storefront decisions change in the future.
The backlash from partners makes this level of control harder to overlook. When publishers, retailers, and regional teams are caught off guard, players witness the same power imbalance from a different viewpoint. Sony needs to provide a clearer explanation moving forward, as an absence of communication will make the situation seem intentional.
