Recently, AI-driven game development has faced criticism for overloading app stores with low-quality mobile games. However, there are instances where this technology yields more intriguing outcomes. Google’s lead product and design executive, Ammar Reshi, mentioned that he utilized Fable 5 to bring Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour to the iPhone and iPad.
This is neither an emulator nor a cloud-based version. Reshi’s GitHub page indicates that the original 2003 game engine has been compiled directly for ARM64, making it compatible with iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The initiative employs EA’s GPL source release and builds upon existing community contributions, adding the iOS and iPadOS port.
Claude's role in transitioning a PC classic to the iPhone
The porting process was more complex than simply adapting an old Windows game for a new display. The original engine was designed for a writable PC-style file system, while iOS apps operate within a secure, code-signed bundle. This meant that save files, cache paths, and configuration writes had to be redirected.
"I used Fable 5 to port Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour to iPhone and iPad! This is the actual 2003 engine compiled natively for ARM64, no emulator. Campaign, skirmish, and Generals Challenge all function seamlessly with touch controls designed for an RTS. Open-sourcing everything below!" — Ammar Reshi (@ammaar) July 4, 2026
The graphics pipeline required significant adjustments as well. Zero Hour was designed with DirectX 8 while Apple devices operate on Metal. The project navigates this through DXVK and MoltenVK, converting the old DirectX renderer into Vulkan and subsequently to Metal.
An RTS requires mouse functionality, which the iPhone lacks. Reshi’s port incorporates touch controls tailored for strategy gameplay, featuring tap selection, drag-box selection, two-finger scrolling, pinch zoom, and long-press actions.
A more meaningful application of AI in gaming
Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour was one of the standout PC RTS games of its time, known for its fast-paced and chaotic gameplay that made its Generals Challenge mode a true test of strategy.
For those who grew up playing RTS games on PC, this AI project feels genuinely valuable. There has been a prevalent negative sentiment towards AI in the gaming industry, particularly when it seeks to supplant human creativity or inundate app stores with forgettable titles. In this case, it contributed to adapting a classic for platforms it was never intended to support.
Reshi’s port continues to rely on EA’s source release and years of community development efforts, for which he has given credit. Nevertheless, witnessing Zero Hour run natively on an iPhone is still an astonishing achievement.

While it isn’t an official Nintendo product, the visual nods are easily recognizable.
