Sony is closing the PS3 and PS Vita stores following an extensive period of operation.
The PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita will cease to sell new digital content by July 2027.
Sony is set to shut down the PlayStation Store for both the PS3 and PS Vita, concluding new digital purchases on these cherished older platforms after an impressively lengthy period.
The PS3 was released in 2006 and 2007, varying by region, while the PS Vita debuted in Japan in late 2011 and reached North America and Europe in February 2012. When the final closures take place in July 2027, Sony will have supported PS3 purchases for almost 20 years and PS Vita purchases for over 15 years.
When will the stores close?
The shutdown will occur in stages. The PS3 PlayStation Store will be the first to close, starting in August 2026 for Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries will follow in late 2026.
For the rest of the world, both the PS3 and PS Vita PlayStation Stores will shut down in July 2027. After this, players will no longer be able to purchase new digital games, DLC, or other content on these platforms.
Sony has stated that previously purchased content will still be available for download "for the foreseeable future." The company explains that this decision is due to modern commerce systems and updated payment processing standards that PS3 and PS Vita cannot support adequately.
The preservation issue is significant
For many gamers, the disappointment stems not just from the loss of old storefronts. Several PS3 and Vita titles lack modern ports, physical editions, or alternative purchasing options.
One user highlighted this issue by mentioning that many games exclusive to PS3 and Vita will no longer be available for purchase, including Sony's own titles that have not been ported or added to its cloud gaming service.
Sony had previously attempted to close the PS3 and Vita stores in 2021 but reversed this decision due to strong pushback from players. This new plan allows for more time to make purchases, yet it still leaves the ongoing concern. Once these stores close, a significant portion of PlayStation's older digital library will become harder to access through legal means.
Cinder City requests 64GB of RAM, with even more peculiar PC specs
Remember when 16GB of RAM was sufficient?
For years, PC gamers have humorously noted that game developers treat hardware requirements like a shopping list. Cinder City may have taken that joke a bit too far, as the game's newly listed recommended PC specifications call for an astonishing 64GB of RAM. This requirement has raised eyebrows, especially since the rest of the specifications appear relatively standard.

Sony provided no support for disc owners. Microsoft’s Disc2Digital could fill that void.
Earlier today, Sony announced that it will stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation titles beginning in January 2028. Similarly, Microsoft seems to be adopting a consumer-friendly approach: Xbox owners may not have to abandon their disc collections.
According to Tom Warren from The Verge, Microsoft has been quietly developing a disc-to-digital feature for Xbox, internally named Disc2Digital, enabling players to convert their physical games into permanent digital licenses.

Just days ago, Rockstar faced criticism for not releasing a physical copy of GTA VI, despite the game being priced up to $100. Now, it appears the end of physical game discs is upon us, as Sony has announced it will cease physical releases for PlayStation titles.
Starting in January 2028, new games released on PlayStation consoles will only be available in digital format, whether purchased from the PlayStation Store or a retailer.
