Xbox could allow players to digitize their game discs, and the timing is quite logical.

Sony did not offer any assistance to disc owners. On the other hand, Microsoft's Disc2Digital would provide just that.

Earlier today, Sony revealed it would cease production of physical game discs for new PlayStation titles starting January 2028. It seems Microsoft is following a similar path, but with a more consumer-friendly method: Xbox owners might not need to abandon their disc collections.

According to Tom Warren from The Verge, Microsoft has been working discreetly on a disc-to-digital feature for Xbox, internally referred to as Disc2Digital, allowing players to convert their physical games into permanent digital licenses.

      How does it work?

Recently, Xbox employees began testing this feature, which first appeared in May when “enable Disc2Digital” was mentioned in the Xbox PC app code.

The process is simple. Insert a compatible disc into your Xbox console, install the game, and the system will provide you with a digital entitlement for that specific title.

This is akin to purchasing the game from the digital store. If the game is available on Xbox Cloud Gaming and you have Game Pass, you can stream it. Additionally, if it’s an Xbox Play Anywhere title, you’ll gain access on PCs and handheld devices.

The feature should also function for disc bundles and multi-disc games, including all downloadable content.

      What are the limitations?

According to the report, the Disc2Digital feature is only compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S discs. Discs from Xbox 360 and the original Xbox are not eligible, and some older Xbox One discs may not work as well.

Microsoft informed its internal testers that the functionality depends on the manufacturing specifics of the disc, which may not meet the required features for this program. Notably, the physical disc continues to work normally after being digitized, but if the disc is lent or sold, the digital entitlement will transfer along with it.

The broader context involves Project Helix, Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, for which the presence of a disc drive is still uncertain. If Helix is released without a disc drive, this feature could be crucial for anyone wanting to take their physical library into the next generation.

In contrast, Microsoft's method aids the transition from physical discs by maintaining ownership rights, while Sony's decision simply terminates physical releases, leaving owners and collectors without a clear path for migration—at least for now.

Cinder City is demanding 64GB of RAM, and its other PC specifications are just as odd.

Do you recall when 16GB of RAM seemed sufficient? For years, PC gamers have humorously noted that game developers treat hardware requirements like a shopping list. Cinder City might have taken that joke a bit too far; its newly listed recommended PC specifications ask for an astounding 64GB of RAM, a figure that raises eyebrows since almost everything else on the list appears surprisingly normal.

64GB of RAM paired with an RTX 4060?

Sony is closing the PS3 and PS Vita stores after an extended run.

Sony is terminating the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita, marking the end of new digital purchases on two of its most cherished older platforms after a notably lengthy duration.

The PS3 debuted in 2006 and 2007 depending on the region, while the PS Vita launched in Japan in late 2011 before expanding to North America and Europe in February 2012. By the time the final closures occur in July 2027, Sony will have facilitated PS3 store purchases for nearly two decades and PS Vita purchases for over 15 years.

Sony puts an end to physical PlayStation games. The disc era concludes for Team Blue.

The disc era is coming to a close, termed by them as a natural transition.

Just a few days ago, Rockstar faced criticism for not offering a physical copy of GTA VI while charging up to $100 for the eagerly awaited title. Now, it appears that the final days of game discs are approaching. Sony has officially announced the discontinuation of physical releases for PlayStation titles.

Beginning in January 2028, new titles for PlayStation consoles will no longer be sold on disc. Everything released after that point, which is roughly a year and a half away, will be exclusively digital, whether purchased from the PlayStation Store or a retailer.
