Apple's upcoming redesign of the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro is expected in 2027.

Apple is set to unveil an updated iPad Pro lineup and a redesigned entry-level MacBook Pro in the first half of 2027, as reported by Bloomberg. The iPad Pro update will maintain its existing 11-inch and 13-inch sizes while focusing on internal enhancements, whereas the MacBook Pro redesign will align the entry-level 14-inch model, codenamed K104, with the design Apple is implementing for its more expensive MacBooks. The modifications to the iPad Pro are primarily internal.

According to 9to5Mac, which supports this news, four new models are undergoing testing for a spring 2027 launch, retaining the current chassis and available in both Wi-Fi and cellular options. The main upgrade involves faster chips, and Apple has previously trialed vapor-chamber cooling for the iPad to help sustain performance during extended, demanding use without overheating.

Apple's last update to the iPad Pro lineup was in October 2025 with the M5 chip, so a refresh in 2027 would represent a relatively swift turnaround compared to the tablet's typical upgrade cycle.

A more significant change is occurring with the Mac lineup. Apple recently completed a straightforward update to the entry-level MacBook Pro, codenamed J804, which retains the current design while integrating a new base M6 chip, with plans for release this year. The K104 project, however, represents a more ambitious direction: a 14-inch laptop adopting the same new design style that Apple is preparing for its touchscreen-enabled, higher-end MacBook Pros expected between late 2026 and early 2027, though without the touchscreen feature. Both models lie within a broader shift in Apple’s chip strategy.

The company is accelerating the launch of its M7 generation, aiming to release the base M7 chip in the first half of 2027, moving away from the usual schedule. Consequently, Apple will bypass the high-end M6 Pro and M6 Max variants, breaking the pattern established since the M1 debut in 2020. The M7 series is reportedly designed mainly for on-device AI tasks, with M7 Pro and Max chips anticipated later in 2027 and an M7 Ultra not expected until 2028.

These developments are not immune to Apple’s supply challenges; the ongoing global memory shortage has already led the company to remove configurations from its online store and raise prices across its current Mac and iPad range. Gurman’s report clearly states that persistent chip and memory shortages may disrupt the 2027 schedule. In June, Apple increased the starting price of the iPad Pro to $1,199 for the 11-inch model and to $1,499 for the 13-inch model from $1,299.

This serves as a reminder that the products launching next year will enter a market where component costs, alongside design ambitions, are influencing Apple’s offerings and timelines. The MacBook Pro redesign comes amid a company momentarily reevaluating its design philosophy. Gurman has reported a significant reduction in staff at Apple's design studio since the Jony Ive era, and incoming CEO John Ternus has expressed a desire to revitalize it. In this context, a chassis update for the popular MacBook Pro line serves as both an evaluation of Apple's post-Ive design path and a hardware refresh.

Apple has not yet commented on this report. If the timeline remains intact, the iPad Pro and entry-level MacBook Pro updates will contribute to what Gurman and other sources have indicated as an exceptionally busy product year for Apple, which also includes a foldable iPhone and the iPhone’s 20th-anniversary offerings, although pricing for either 2027 product has not been revealed. The on-time arrival of the first half of 2027 will depend less on Apple’s design decisions and more on how quickly the memory market stabilizes.

The same supply constraints that previously affected Mac mini and Mac Studio configurations earlier this year continue to persist, providing less flexibility for a company launching both a foldable iPhone and two redesigned product lines concurrently to manage any additional delays.
