Apple's upcoming redesigns for the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro are expected to arrive in 2027.
Apple is gearing up to release a revamped iPad Pro lineup and a redesigned entry-level MacBook Pro in the first half of 2027, as reported by Bloomberg. The iPad Pro will maintain its current 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, focusing on internal upgrades, while the MacBook Pro redesign includes a new entry-level 14-inch model, referred to as K104, aligning its design with that of Apple’s more expensive MacBooks. Most changes for the iPad Pro are internal.
This news, confirmed by 9to5Mac, details four new models in testing for spring 2027, all featuring the existing chassis and available in both Wi-Fi and cellular versions. The standout update is the introduction of faster processors, and Apple has previously explored vapor-chamber cooling technology for the tablet, designed to enhance performance during intensive usage without causing overheating.
The latest updates from the EU tech sector, a narrative from our wise founder Boris, and some dubious AI-generated art are included in a weekly newsletter delivered to your inbox for free. Sign up now! Apple last refreshed the iPad Pro lineup in October 2025 with the M5 chip, making a 2027 update a relatively swift progression for the tablet's typical upgrade pattern.
The more significant transition is within the Mac category. Apple had already completed a straightforward update of the entry-level MacBook Pro months prior, known as J804, which retains the current design while simply incorporating a new base M6 chip, slated for release this year. The K104 project is more ambitious, introducing a 14-inch laptop sporting the new design language Apple is implementing for its higher-end, touchscreen-enabled MacBook Pros, expected between late 2026 and early 2027, though it won't feature a touchscreen. Both products are part of a larger shift in Apple’s chip strategy.
The company is accelerating the release of its M7 generation, targeting the launch of the base M7 chip as soon as the first half of 2027, ahead of its usual schedule. This timeline indicates that Apple will not offer high-end M6 Pro and M6 Max variants, diverging from its established pattern since the M1 debuted in 2020. The M7 series is primarily designed to support on-device AI tasks, with M7 Pro and Max chips anticipated later in 2027 and an M7 Ultra not expected until 2028.
These developments are not happening in a vacuum; Apple’s supply challenges, including a global memory shortage, have already forced the company to remove configurations from its online store and raise prices across its current Mac and iPad offerings. Gurman’s report explicitly states that ongoing chip and memory limitations might still impact the 2027 timeline. In June, Apple increased the starting price for the 11-inch iPad Pro from $999 to $1,199 and for the 13-inch model from $1,299 to $1,499.
This serves as a reminder that products launching next year will enter a market where component costs, alongside design aspirations, will influence what Apple delivers and when. The MacBook Pro redesign is also set against a backdrop of the company grappling with its design direction publicly. Gurman has reported that Apple’s design team has significantly diminished since the era of Jony Ive, and incoming CEO John Ternus intends to revitalize it. In this context, a chassis overhaul for the sought-after MacBook Pro tier serves as both a test of Apple’s post-Ive design team and a hardware update.
Apple has not provided any comments regarding the report. If the schedule proceeds as expected, the iPad Pro and entry-level MacBook Pro updates would contribute to what Gurman and other reports highlight as a notably busy product year for Apple, which will also include a foldable iPhone and a 20th-anniversary iPhone lineup, though prices for either product in 2027 have not yet been revealed. Whether the first half of 2027 unfolds as planned will depend less on Apple's design decisions and more on the stabilization of the memory market.
The same supply shortages that previously depleted Mac mini and Mac Studio configurations this year show no signs of abating, and a company managing a foldable iPhone alongside two redesigned product lines simultaneously has less capacity than usual to accommodate any additional delays.
