According to reports, Apple aims to sell 10 million foldable iPhones, but the initial price might really take you by surprise.

      Nikkei Asia reports that Apple has increased its production target for the iPhone Ultra to approximately 10 million units ahead of its September launch.

      Apple is planning to produce more units of its first foldable iPhone than initially anticipated, as indicated by a new report from Nikkei Asia. The company has reportedly informed suppliers to prepare around 10 million units of the iPhone Ultra for 2026, an increase from previous estimates of 7 to 8 million.

      A 30% increase in production targets

      This revised figure is significant for a first-generation device that has faced challenges in reaching production. Earlier reports highlighted manufacturing issues related to the hinge that briefly raised concerns about the September launch schedule. However, Apple has seemingly resolved most of these problems, and the decision to commit to a higher production volume indicates confidence in the stability of the manufacturing process.

      The iPhone Ultra is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max during Apple's fall event in September. Prior leaks describe it as a book-style foldable featuring a 7.8-inch inner OLED display, a 5.5-inch cover screen, Apple's A20 chip, and a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button instead of Face ID. According to Nikkei, Apple has also informed some suppliers to anticipate up to 85 million total new iPhone orders in the latter half of 2026, potentially raising full-year projections to around 220 million units.

      A significantly higher price tag

      The increase in production may not translate to a lower price for the iPhone Ultra. Leaks indicate a starting price of around $2,500, with models featuring higher storage options possibly reaching $3,000, positioning it well above the iPhone 18 Pro Max and competing foldables on the market.

      At this price point, compromises such as the inclusion of Touch ID instead of Face ID and a dual-camera system lacking a dedicated telephoto lens may be challenging for Apple to justify. Given that the price is closer to a MacBook than a Pro Max, consumers will likely expect far more from the first generation than what is currently rumored.

The Fold 8 is widely rumored to include enhancements to the current design, and Samsung’s teasers imply that there could be more than just the standard model in development.

      The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to launch in these three colors, and black is notably absent.
