Kia can determine the location of your stolen vehicle. However, due to GDPR regulations, it is unable to share this information in real-time. This is the core issue.

If you're considering a car equipped with connected car technology, believing it would assist in recovering it if stolen, you may need to adjust your expectations.

A recent event in the UK highlighted this when a car owner with three tracking devices installed on his vehicle was still unable to retrieve it. The automaker clarified that connected car technology should not be regarded as a “certified security vehicle tracker” (reported by the BBC).

      What transpired in this case?

Ian Fogg, a technology analyst at FDM CCS Insight, had his Kia taken from outside his home in March 2026. While he was traveling abroad, he received a notification on his phone indicating that he had lost access to Kia Connect, the first hint that something was wrong.

Intriguingly, the thieves managed to circumvent three layers of security technology. The initial layer was a video doorbell that recorded the theft. They accessed the vehicle without using the keys and evaded Kia’s connected car security system.

The thieves interrupted his phone's connection through an unsecured entertainment system process, ironically intended to assist new owners in taking control of a vehicle. As a result, Fogg could not track his car's live location. He submitted location requests to Kia Connect eight times, but each response came 24 to 48 hours after the location was logged.

The last known location of the car was in Lithuania. Fogg was able to briefly monitor his vehicle using the AirTag he had placed inside for situations like this, but the anti-stalking noise alert from Apple exposed its location.

What does Kia assert about this service?

“Kia Connect is a customer convenience feature, not a certified security vehicle tracker,” the company explained to the BBC, citing GDPR compliance as the reason it cannot offer real-time tracking.

Thatcham Research, a vehicle safety organization, supported this assertion, warning of a “real and increasing gap” between consumer expectations and the capabilities of connected car features. Although Kia provides proper stolen vehicle tracking for premium subscribers in the US, this service is unavailable in the UK or elsewhere in Europe.

Thatcham suggests using independently certified devices with their own power source for locating vehicles. Although this incident could represent any typical car burglary, the owner’s inability to prevent or recover the car, despite having more security measures in place than most, deserves attention.

Cambridge researchers have discovered a remarkably simple method to extend EV battery life—by applying some pressure.

Typically, innovations in EV batteries involve new chemicals or materials, or optimizing charging speed and capacity. However, recent research indicates that a simple approach can be effective. The University of Cambridge researchers found that maintaining the right amount of pressure on the battery can significantly enhance its lifespan. Their study, published in Nature Energy, concluded that keeping cells under constant pressure could double their longevity without altering the active materials, electrolyte, or fundamental chemistry of the battery.
