Sony ends physical PlayStation games. The disc era is over for Team Blue.

Sony ends physical PlayStation games. The disc era is over for Team Blue.

The disc era is coming to a close, and it's being described as a natural evolution.

Recently, Rockstar faced criticism for not offering a physical edition of GTA VI, even though the price for the much-anticipated game reached up to $100. It seems we are nearing the end of physical game discs. Sony has now announced that it will cease physical releases for PlayStation titles.

Beginning January 2028, all new titles for PlayStation consoles will only be available digitally. This change is roughly a year and a half away, meaning that after this date, games can only be obtained through the PlayStation Store or from retailers in digital format.

So, what does this mean for PlayStation players?

According to Sony, “This reflects a natural progression for Sony Interactive Entertainment in response to changing consumer trends, as the preference for digital media is overwhelmingly surpassing that for physical discs.”

For the time being, physical copies of PlayStation games will still exist, but not for long. Any titles set to release before January 2028, particularly those already confirmed for a disc release, will still have physical editions.

Your current collection of physical games will remain valid, and there's no word on existing PlayStation consoles losing the capability to play game discs.

What is coming to an end, however, is the manufacture of new physical discs for upcoming titles. Games released after January 2028 will not be available in disc format.

      Was this truly unexpected?

The decline of physical discs isn't surprising. Sony unveiled the all-digital PS5 in 2020, the disc-free PS5 Slim in 2023, and the PS5 Pro without a disc drive in 2025. Each new release hinted at the direction in which Sony was moving.

Steam popularized digital purchases, and as game file sizes exceeded the 100GB mark, shipping games on multiple discs in physical packages became more challenging.

Additionally, with expansions becoming common, more games transitioned to digital formats. While large studios could likely sustain disc releases, particularly with games priced at $70-80, this is a complicated financial decision for independent developers.

The introduction of subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and cloud-based gaming has further diminished the desire for purchasing digital game copies.

In other news, Microsoft seems to be pursuing a different strategy.

Earlier today, Sony revealed that it will discontinue physical game discs for new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028, while Microsoft appears to be taking a similar route but in a more consumer-friendly manner: Xbox users may not have to part with their disc collections.

According to Tom Warren from The Verge, Microsoft has been working on a disc-to-digital feature for Xbox, known internally as Disc2Digital, which allows players to convert their physical games into permanent digital licenses.

Sony is also winding down the PS3 and PS Vita stores after a lengthy period. The PS3 store will cease new digital sales by July 2027.

Sony is shutting down the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita, ending digital purchases on these cherished older platforms after an impressive duration. The PS3 launched in 2006 and 2007 based on the region, whereas the PS Vita debuted in Japan in late 2011 before reaching North America and Europe in February 2012. By the time the stores close in July 2027, Sony will have provided PS3 store support for nearly 20 years and over 15 years for the PS Vita.

Acer's 1,000Hz gaming monitor has become a reality, but with a hefty price tag and no confirmed launch date.

Acer’s 1,000Hz gaming monitor, the XV273U F5, has transitioned from announcement to listing on Amazon with a price set at $699.99, giving competitive players a price point to consider before one of the fastest monitors arrives in North America. However, as of now, it is temporarily out of stock, and Acer has pointed to a launch window in Q4 for North America instead of a specific release date.
