X's standalone messaging application is now being rolled out on Android, featuring encrypted chats, calls, and file sharing.
X is progressing towards Elon Musk's vision of an "everything app." The company has officially announced the launch of XChat on Android, extending its standalone messaging service beyond the iPhone and granting millions more users access to its expanding range of communication features.
Encrypted conversations, calls, and file sharing are now available on Android
According to X, Android users can now download XChat, which separates direct messaging from the main X app into its own dedicated experience. The app offers end-to-end encrypted messaging, disappearing messages, voice and video calls, group chats, media sharing, and file transfers, positioning it as a direct competitor to services like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal.
The Android release comes after XChat's introduction on the iPhone earlier this year and signifies another step in the platform's evolution beyond social media. Instead of viewing messaging as merely an additional feature within X, the company is increasingly framing XChat as a distinct communication platform that could eventually support broader services within the X ecosystem.
In addition to the essentials, XChat features PIN-protected conversations, enhanced media sharing quality, and the capability to send files up to 2GB.
A key component of the 'everything app' vision
Interestingly, the Android launch may be as significant as the addition of new features. Android dominates the global smartphone market, and without it, XChat would likely face challenges in becoming a mainstream messaging platform. However, it remains to be seen whether users will be inclined to switch from established apps like WhatsApp or Telegram.
Nevertheless, with XChat now accessible on both major mobile platforms, X has overcome one of its most substantial obstacles. The messaging app is transitioning from a mere experiment for iPhone users to a fundamental element in the company's long-term goal of evolving X into more than just a social network.
