Netflix has become significantly more annoying for those who share an account within a household.
Soon, each profile will require its own email address, which adds another challenge for households sharing a TV.
Netflix's scrutiny of password sharing is not finished. The streaming service is now implementing a new change that could complicate shared household accounts further, as it will require each profile on an account to have a distinct email address. While this adjustment is not aimed at preventing families from sharing a subscription, it adds an extra layer of identity verification that many users may not have wanted.
Netflix aims for every profile to possess a unique identity.
As reported by CordCuttersNews, Netflix is starting to introduce email addresses specific to profiles, allowing users within a shared household account to connect their own email instead of depending only on the primary account holder. Current users will be asked to provide an email when switching profiles, while new profiles must have one set up during their creation.
Netflix states that this feature is intended to enhance account security and facilitate profile management. Unique email addresses will enable users to recover their profiles, receive tailored notifications, and simplify any future profile transfers should they wish to start their own subscription. The company also notes that it will streamline the verification of identities when logging in on new devices, fitting seamlessly with Netflix's ongoing initiatives to limit account sharing beyond the household.
The deployment of this feature appears to be gradual, rolling out across various supported devices and regions; hence, not all users will encounter the prompts right away. Existing viewing history, recommendations, and watchlists will stay associated with each individual profile.
Another minor adjustment brings significant inconvenience.
It comes as no surprise that the rollout has not been well-received by users. Complaints are already flooding Reddit from individuals who find the new email requirement unnecessarily invasive. Some users have suggested a potential temporary workaround by disabling Feature Testing under Account > Security on the web, but since Netflix has yet to officially recognize this, there is no certainty that the solution will persist.
This change doesn't prevent families from sharing a household account, but it does bolster Netflix's long-term approach of giving each profile its own identity. For some, adding an email may be a simple one-time task. For others, particularly households with profiles created long ago for children or tech-challenged family members, it adds another layer of complexity. From Netflix's viewpoint, it enhances profile security and makes eventual transfer easier. For users, it serves as a reminder that sharing a family account is no longer as straightforward as it once was.
