A screen overlay that mimics paper could make extended work sessions feel more comfortable.
Most tools designed for screen comfort typically adjust color temperature. For example, Apple’s Night Shift warms the screen, often giving it an orange hue. Paperman offers an intriguing alternative by adding a delicate paper-like texture to the display.
Available for both Mac and Windows, the app aims to give screens a look similar to paper, matte glass, or an e-ink display. It lessens the harsh contrast and diminishes the glossy appearance of modern screens during prolonged reading or writing activities.
A layer of texture for your screen
Paperman operates as a lightweight overlay on the desktop. It does not interrupt focus, allowing mouse clicks and keyboard inputs to pass through, ensuring that normal use is unaffected.
The app provides various texture options, such as Classic Matte, Whisper Weave, Sunbaked Parchment, Saddle Linen, Painter’s Press, Vellum Mist, and Mulberry Veil. Users have the ability to modify the intensity, assign hotkeys, utilize Paperman on multiple monitors, and exclude particular applications such as photo editors, video players, or creative software. It can also be temporarily paused or automatically disabled when the device is unplugged.
As Paperman is solely a software effect, it cannot completely replicate a genuine matte screen or an actual e-ink display. Nonetheless, it may be appealing to those who find glossy, high-contrast screens tiring during extended work periods.

The texture remains static
It's important to note that the paper texture does not track with your mouse or shift alongside the content on display. Paperman employs a static overlay, which enhances the subtlety of the effect and helps minimize resource usage.
This means that it may not feel exactly like a physical sheet of paper moving beneath your hand. The developer mentioned that a moving texture was tested initially, but it demanded more battery and CPU/GPU resources than desired. For the time being, the static texture remains the default option.
Currently, Paperman is offered at a limited-time discount of 50%, priced at $5.99 for a lifetime license. Additionally, there is a free version for Windows that allows one hour of use each day.

Windows 11 is introducing a new Screen Tint mode, which may benefit your eyes.
Users can apply customized color overlays to lessen screen brightness and visual fatigue.
Microsoft is trialing a new accessibility feature for Windows 11 called Screen Tint, which could prove to be a minor addition with a significant impact. Unlike Night Light, which modifies the display's color temperature, Screen Tint applies a customizable color overlay over the entire screen, allowing for a gentler experience on the eyes during lengthy work or gaming sessions.

Apple is considering a contentious solution for the memory crisis, which is drawing criticism from the US government.
Apple has cited rising memory costs as the reason for a recent price increase. Its proposed solution involves seeking government approval to procure memory chips from a Chinese vendor.
The vendor in question is CXMT, a Chinese chip manufacturer that has been added to the Pentagon's blacklist of Chinese Military Companies due to alleged connections with the Chinese military.
As iPads become more expensive, Motorola's Pad 70 Pro emerges as a strong contender… but it's not yet available for US consumers.
If you're unaware of Apple's recent price hike, which affected nearly all products in their lineup except the iPhone and Apple Watch (for now), you must be living under a rock. The revision significantly raised the prices of all iPads.
In contrast, Motorola has launched a 13-inch tablet that seems promising on paper. The Moto Pad 70 Pro is priced around $440 for the base model. However, the drawback is that the device is not currently available in the US.
